Overview

A leading player in the renewable energy sector is seeking a high-performing
Business Development Director
with a proven record in originating and closing major energy deals. This role is focused on driving revenue growth through structured energy sales, corporate offtakes, and innovative renewable energy solutions for commercial and industrial (C&I) clients.

The successful candidate will be a top-tier sales professional who thrives in a fast-moving market, has a deep understanding of the South African electricity sector, and is capable of building strategic relationships at senior and executive levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, pursue, and close large-scale renewable energy deals, including PPAs, wheeling agreements, and hybrid energy solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with C&I clients, utilities, municipalities, developers, and financial stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement a sales strategy to grow market share and meet revenue targets.
  • Lead commercial negotiations, structuring deals to balance client needs, risk, and profitability.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (technical, legal, finance, and trading) to ensure all proposals are feasible, compliant, and commercially sound.
  • Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and competitor activity to inform sales strategies.
  • Represent the organisation at industry events, conferences, and client meetings, reinforcing its position as a trusted energy partner.
  • Mentor and support junior sales and business development staff to enhance overall team performance.

Requirements

  • 10–15+ years' experience in renewable energy sales, origination, or structured energy trading.
  • Proven success in selling and closing high-value energy deals (PPAs or equivalent agreements).
  • Deep knowledge of South Africa's electricity market, including wheeling frameworks and private-market transactions.
  • Exceptional negotiation, commercial acumen, and deal-structuring skills.
  • Strong existing network of C&I energy buyers, developers, and financial partners.
  • Analytical skills with the ability to model commercial and financial outcomes for complex deals.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field; postgraduate or MBA advantageous.
