As a Regional Environmental Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring environmental compliance at Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in South Africa. Your primary objective will be to develop and implement standards and policies that support regulatory compliance across regional operations and construction teams.

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of environmental regulations and standards, particularly those applicable to South Africa. You will be expected to work closely with internal and external partners, including government entities, contractors, consultants, design, construction, operations, and other key stakeholders to ensure seamless collaboration and effective risk management.

You will also be responsible for conducting environmental performance analysis, establishing and monitoring metrics, and guiding teams in the implementation of Amazon environmental standards. This role requires excellent communication skills, program management experience, and the ability to lead complex projects.

This position is based in Cape Town and involves regular domestic travel and occasional international travel. If you are passionate about environmental sustainability and have a proven track record of driving compliance initiatives, we encourage you to apply.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee compliance with local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations and Amazon policy
  • Develop regional strategic programs by integrating with engineering, construction, and operations to drive environmentally responsible practices
  • Function as a leader regarding regulatory agency interactions, permit evaluation and processing, and new process and technology introduction
  • Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees is completed in accordance with Amazon standards
  • Develop environmental metrics to measure, monitor, and forecast performance
  • Conduct thorough and accurate environmental audits for continuous improvement
  • Prioritize and manage multiple technically complex assignments concurrently
  • Represent Amazon at appropriate levels with governmental agencies and throughout the company
  • Build collaborative relationships with various stakeholders to identify and manage risks early on
  • Submit timely reports to governmental agencies
  • Complete thorough and accurate environmental incident investigations and associated regulatory reports, developing corrective actions as needed

About the Team:

The AWS Environmental team is a dynamic and expanding group critical to enabling AWS's growth worldwide, ensuring compliance of AWS's global operations, including physical data centers, facilities, customer-facing enterprises, and products. As a key member of this team, you will be responsible for architecting and implementing AWS's global environmental programs, defining and refining policies and procedures, overseeing the development of standards and tools, auditing and metrics, employee training, and engaging with AWS business units to provide scalable and effective environmental compliance strategies.

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience engaging with regulatory agencies in permit applications or equivalent
  • Leadership experience in change management, influencing non-direct reports, and collaborating with cross-functional teams
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical or environmental engineering, or a related field of study
  • Proven track record of implementing scalable compliance solutions in a regulated environment
  • Strong project management skills, including resource planning, schedule management, reporting, and prioritization
