PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

This 2-month fixed-term position is designed to support a field-based assessment of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in selected communities. The Junior Fieldwork & Reporting Assistant will help gather firsthand observations on how centres operate, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and document practical insights that contribute to strengthening ECD service delivery. The role offers an entry-level opportunity to learn about early childhood systems while supporting meaningful, on-the-groundwork.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

FIELDWORK

  • Visit existing ECD centres to observe daily operations and understand governance, procedural, and compliance requirements.
  • Assess the suitability and safety of physical spaces, including security features such as secure doors and burglar-proofing.
  • Evaluate the availability, condition, and creative use of educational resources, including the integration of recycled materials.

REPORTING

  • Compile comprehensive, well-structured reports based on field observations.
  • Provide practical, actionable recommendations to enhance the quality and safety of ECD services.
  • Document best practices related to staff support, child safety, health, and overall well-being.
  • Analyse how ECD centres support children's developmental domains and use assessments to inform practice.
  • Research and describe approaches to fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement within centres.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Development, Education, Social Sciences, Community Development, or a related field (NQF Level 7).
  • Strong research, analytical, and report-writing abilities.
  • Basic understanding of financial management, bookkeeping, or budgeting principles.
  • Keen observational skills and the ability to engage respectfully with diverse stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently in the field.
  • A genuine interest in early childhood development and improving outcomes for young learners is highly valued.
