The IT Security Assistant plays a key role in supporting the IT Security function by ensuring audit readiness, maintaining compliance, and helping resolve audit findings. This role also assists in improving the overall security posture of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Audit Coordination

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external IT audits.
  • Coordinate audit engagements, evidence collection, and status meetings.
  • Maintain a register of audit findings and ensure timely resolution.
Tracking & Reporting
  • Maintain dashboards and trackers for audit and risk-related issues.
  • Follow up with stakeholders for updates and documentation.
  • Prepare regular status reports and summaries for management.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Draft and update IT policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Support regulatory submissions (e.g. POPIA, ISO, COBIT, NCA, SWIFT CSP).
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation.
Issue Remediation
  • Collaborate with IT teams to close audit issues effectively.
  • Draft remediation plans and document accepted or deferred risks.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis for recurring or high-risk findings.

Risk & Controls

  • Support the implementation of improved IT controls and SOPs.
  • Assist in IT risk assessments and mitigation tracking.
  • Stay current with applicable laws, regulations, and standards.

 Framework Alignment

  • Help align IT processes with frameworks like COBIT, NIST, ISO 27001, ITIL.
  • Promote awareness and adherence to IT governance standards.

Security Support

  • Assist in monitoring and responding to security alerts and vulnerabilities.
  • Help manage and document security tools (firewalls, antivirus, etc.).
  • Support staff training and promote security best practices.
  • Maintain security asset and license inventories.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • National Diploma or Degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 2–3 years' experience in IT audit, risk, compliance, or GRC roles.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a banking or financial services environment.
  • Understanding of regulatory environments (e.g. SARB, FSCA).
  • Certifications such as CISA, CRISC, CGEIT, or ISO 27001 Lead Implementer/Auditor.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of IT controls, risk frameworks, and audit practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; Power BI is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ITSM or GRC tools (e.g. Service Desk, TeamMate).
