Core responsibilities

Vehicle operation: Safely operate trucks to transport goods and materials, adhering to all traffic and company rules and regulations.

Route and schedule management: Plan and follow efficient routes to meet delivery deadlines, making adjustments for traffic or other delays.

Vehicle maintenance: Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections to check for safety and mechanical issues. Perform minor maintenance like checking fluids and refueling, and report any defects that require repair.

Loading and unloading: Load and unload cargo, ensuring it is properly secured and balanced within the vehicle to prevent damage during transit.

Record-keeping: Maintain accurate logs of driving hours, rest periods, distances, and fuel and toll receipts.

Communication: Liaise with dispatchers to report any issues or delays and coordinate with customers or distribution centers upon arrival.

Paperwork: Verify and complete all necessary transport documents, including delivery confirmations and customer signatures.

Essential skills and qualifications

Proven experience as a truck driver.

Knowledge of applicable truck driving rules and regulations.

Experience with electronic equipment like GPS and ELDs (Electronic Logging Devices).

Ability to drive for long hours and handle unexpected situations, such as traffic or weather.

A clean driving record with no recent moving violations is often required.

Physical ability to load and unload cargo, which may involve using tools like pallet jacks or forklifts.

Strong communication and customer service skills.
