The Payment Platform Business Lead will serve as the strategic owner and commercial driver of our innovative payment platform, taking full accountability for its market success from launch through to scale. This is a highly entrepreneurial role that combines product ownership, business development, and strategic management to establish the platform as a leading solution in the payments ecosystem. The successful candidate will act as the central nexus between customers, internal teams, and market opportunities, translating technical capabilities into commercial value while shaping the platform's evolution based on real-world feedback and market dynamics.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Ownership & Strategy:
- Own the end-to-end product vision, strategy, and roadmap for the payment platform
- Define and prioritize product features and enhancements based on market needs, customer feedback, and competitive positioning
- Serve as the ultimate decision-maker on product direction, balancing innovation with commercial viability
- Develop and maintain the product backlog, working closely with development teams to ensure alignment with business objectives
- Create compelling business cases for new features and platform investments
Business Management & Commercial Leadership:
- Take full P&L responsibility for the payment platform business unit
- Develop and execute go-to-market strategies to drive platform adoption and revenue growth
- Establish pricing models, packaging strategies, and commercial terms that maximize value capture
- Build and manage strategic partnerships with payment processors, financial institutions, merchants, and technology partners
- Monitor platform performance metrics, including adoption rates, transaction volumes, revenue, and customer satisfaction
Sales & Revenue Generation:
- Lead direct sales efforts to acquire new platform customers and expand existing relationships
- Develop sales strategies, pipelines, and forecasts to achieve aggressive growth targets
- Work with existing key account managers and sales teams to drive sales into targeted named accounts
- Craft compelling value propositions and pitch materials tailored to different customer segments
- Negotiate complex commercial agreements with enterprise clients and strategic partners
- Build and potentially manage a sales team as the business scales
Customer Engagement & Market Intelligence:
- Establish deep relationships with customers to understand pain points, needs, and desired outcomes
- Conduct regular customer discovery sessions, feedback loops, and advisory board meetings
- Translate customer insights into actionable product requirements and business strategies
- Act as the voice of the customer within the organization, ensuring their needs drive decision-making
- Monitor market trends, competitive landscape, and regulatory changes affecting the payments industry
Cross-Functional Leadership:
- Collaborate with engineering, design, and operations teams to deliver a world-class platform
- Work with marketing to develop positioning, messaging, and demand generation campaigns
- Partner with customer success teams to ensure seamless onboarding and ongoing support
- Align with finance and legal teams on contracts, compliance, and financial planning
- Present platform performance and strategic recommendations to executive leadership and board members
Innovation & Future Development:
- Identify emerging opportunities in payments technology, including new payment methods, markets, and use cases
- Define and champion future platform capabilities that maintain competitive differentiation
- Evaluate potential acquisitions, build-versus-buy decisions, and technology partnerships
- Stay ahead of industry innovation in areas such as digital currencies, embedded finance, and API-driven payments
Required Experience & Qualifications:
Essential Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in the payments, fintech, or financial services industry with demonstrable knowledge of payment processing, acquiring, or platform ecosystems
- 5+ years in product management or product ownership roles, with proven success launching and scaling B2B software or platform products
- 3+ years in business development, sales, or commercial roles with a track record of exceeding revenue targets
- Experience working with payment platforms, APIs, or similar technology solutions sold to enterprise customers
- Proven ability to manage products through their full lifecycle from concept to market leadership
Technical & Domain Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of payment rails, processing flows, settlement, and the broader payments value chain
- Familiarity with payment industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements (PCI-DSS, KYC/AML, Open Banking, etc.)
- Strong technical aptitude with ability to communicate effectively with engineering teams and understand API-based platforms
- Knowledge of modern product development methodologies including Agile, Lean, and Design Thinking
Commercial & Business Skills
:
- Demonstrated success in building business cases, financial models, and strategic plans for new products or business units
- Experience negotiating complex commercial agreements and partnerships
- Strong analytical skills with ability to leverage data to drive decision-making
- Track record of achieving revenue and growth targets in competitive markets
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills:
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills with ability to influence without direct authority
- Strong presentation and communication skills, capable of engaging audiences from technical teams to C-suite executives
- Customer-centric mindset with natural curiosity and empathy for user needs
- Entrepreneurial spirit with comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-paced environments
- Proven ability to build consensus and drive cross-functional collaboration
Desirable Qualifications:
- B Eng or BSc Comp Sci
- MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification
- Experience in a startup or scale-up environment taking a new product to market
- Previous experience building or managing teams
- Network of relationships within the payments or fintech ecosystem
- International market experience, particularly in regions relevant to platform expansion
