A desk reporter is a key member of the output desk, responsible for ensuring that the newsgathering process is conducted in a timely, accurate and engaging manner. A desk reporter has to produce unique and original stories that set Newzroom Afrika apart from other news broadcasters. They must be able to identify strong news angles from interviews conducted on the channel, monitor breaking news and developments in stories on the news agenda, as well as contribute to the daily news diary.

**Key responsibilities**:
Write news scripts that adhere to the channel’s editorial policy and style guide.
Fact check story details and ensure content is accurate and unbiased
Write crawlers and straps for news broadcasts
Write to visuals and ensure visuals match the script
Search archives and select the appropriate visuals
Cut sound bytes from interviews
Cut visuals for overlay, headlines, etc
Stay in constant communication with the field reporter for updates on stories
Ability to priorities assignments depending on the needs of the news bulletin
Research topics and provide input on angles for the day’s news coverage, as well as for forward planning
Suggest guests; commission and write graphics and other on-air elements
Check local and international news wires, social media and newspapers to identify stories
Come up with unique and original story ideas, appropriate for our target audience
Work on long form reports (packages)
Provide content for Newzroom Afrika’s online offering, including the website and social media accounts
Skills and competencies
Minimum three years’ experience in television news
Degree or diploma in journalism, media studies, or other relevant qualification
Experience in the use of one or more newsroom production systems and desktop editing software
Ability to identify strong story angles and write quickly
Strong news sense
Good understanding of legal and ethical issues with regards to TV broadcasts.
Understanding of BCCSA Code of Conduct.
Good grasp of English and other South African official languages
Excellent knowledge of local and international news
Team player with a passion for news and current affairs
