Senior Coffee Roaster

Head roaster Job Description:
The role of a Head Coffee Roaster is critical in ensuring the quality and efficiency of the coffee
roasting process.

1. Ensuring and Maintaining Coffee Roast Quality:
○ Oversee the entire coffee roasting process to ensure that the quality of the
roasted coffee meets or exceeds established standards.
○ Conduct regular sensory evaluations to assess the flavour, aroma, and
consistency of roasted coffees.
○ Implement quality control measures and adjustments to maintain the desired
roast profiles.

2. Roasting of Tonnage Required to Keep Ahead of Demand:
○ Plan and execute roasting schedules to meet current and future demand while
adhering to quality standards.
○ Monitor production forecasts and collaborate with the production team to adjust
roasting plans accordingly.

3. Development and Recording of Roast Profiles for New Coffees:
○ Experiment with and create roast profiles for new coffee varieties, considering
factors such as origin, bean type, and customer preferences.
○ Maintain a detailed record of successful roast profiles for future reference and
consistency.

4. Accurate Recording of Daily Input Stock Usage:
○ Keep meticulous records of the quantity and types of green coffee beans used in
the roasting process each day.
○ Coordinate with the inventory team to ensure accurate tracking of input stock and
prevent shortages or excess stock.

5. Accurate Tracking of Usage and Output Tonnage:
○ Monitor and record the output tonnage of roasted coffee to ensure production
efficiency and accuracy.
○ Implement systems for tracking and reporting on production metrics to inform
decision-making.

6. Managing Inventory to Minimize and Reduce Loss or Waste:
○ Implement inventory control measures to minimise loss or waste of both green
and roasted coffee.
○ Collaborate with suppliers to optimise ordering quantities and reduce excess
stock.

7. Tracking of Green Coffee Stock Levels and Keeping Informed:
○ Regularly assess and report on green coffee stock levels to maintain optimal
inventory levels.
○ Communicate effectively with relevant stakeholders, particularly with the
procurement team, to ensure the availability of required green coffee beans.

8. Maintaining the Serviceable State of Machinery

○ Follow and implement the prescribed maintenance schedule to keep roasting machinery in optimal working condition. ○ Respond promptly to any equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime.

9. Maintaining the Required Cleaning Schedule:
○ Implement and adhere to a regular cleaning schedule for roasting machinery to prevent contamination and maintain operational efficiency.

○ Reduce the risk of fire hazards and breakdowns through consistent maintenance and cleanliness.

10. Creating a Clean and Safe Working Environment:
○ Enforce cleanliness and safety protocols in the roasting area to ensure a hazard-free and hygienic workspace.

○ Optimize space utilization to facilitate an organized and efficient production environment.

11. Research into New and Existing Methodologies:
○ Stay informed about advancements in coffee roasting techniques, equipment, and quality control methodologies.

○ Conduct research and experimentation to identify opportunities for continuous improvement in quality and production efficiency.
