Your job

The role is responsible for the technical lead of a team of underwriters, by providing the technical centre of competency, in line with the requirements of Munich Re of Africa (MRoA) and the group underwriting strategy, in order to deliver on strategic objectives. The role is responsible for the underwriting of new and renewal of existing treaty business, within larger and more complex portfolios in a specific line of business, according to the group underwriting strategy, Munich Re of Africa (MRoA) strategy and own mandate and authority. The role is required to maintain consultative relationships with clients/markets in their portfolios, for the specific line of business, in order to monitor and improve portfolio sustainability and profitability. In addition, there is a need to co-develop innovative solutions for clients/markets, in line with the Munich Re (MR) risk appetite.

**Tasks**:

- Participate in the development of a particular business line strategy, by creating an understanding of the business line and its capacity to deliver upon clients and internal stakeholders’ expectations.
- Deliver upon the developed strategic objectives by compiling the correct technical competencies within the team for the delivery.
- Implement the particular business line strategy independently, by underwriting new and existing business, in accordance with the MRoA underwriting authority.
- Assessing, pricing, administering and where necessary designing treaty offers in accordance with Munich Re risk appetite, underwriting guidelines, internal processes and authorities.
- Set standards such as minimum requirements to underwrite as the technical centre of competence.
- Prepare, check and sign treaty wordings within own delegated authority and group directives by engaging with clients to understand what needs to be underwritten to achieve client goals.
- Assess the underwriting process of clients to provide credible evaluations of the quality of clients’ books.
- Cooperating with client management to ensure that optimal service levels to clients are maintained including meeting clients and/or negotiating treaty terms and conditions.
- Participate in identifying and acquiring clients, as well as broker targets, for traditional and innovative risk transfer mechanisms to create value for MRoA.
- Developing non-traditional reinsurance and (where appropriate) primary insurance concepts in cooperation with specialists within Munich Re Group, if necessary.
- Actively contributing to technical know-how within the Property Treaty Underwriting team through research, participation in projects, cooperation with Munich Re Group experts et.
- Gain full understanding of what constitutes valid and technically accurate underwriting to develop appropriate levels of underwriting skill and technical competency.
- Assist in organising and conducting seminars / workshops, for external clients and internal stakeholders, to enhance levels of Underwriting.
- Guide, coach and mentor less experienced / skilled underwriters.
- Conduct peer reviews of Underwriters and Junior Underwriters’ recommendations before submission to ensure validity and technical accuracy of the recommendations.
- Assist in creating and maintaining an enabling work environment that will foster effective teamwork and high-quality deliverables, by ensuring clarity of purpose.
- Represent MRoA at Industry Bodies as a recognised thought leader and expert in the Reinsurance field.

**Profile**:

- Postgraduate Degree in a relevant line of business, such as Law, Engineering, Insurance, Actuarial/Statistical, Economic, etc.
- At least 6 - 8 years of relevant Insurance experience or at least 5 - 7 years of relevant Reinsurance experience
- Deep knowledge and understanding of specific line of business / specialisation
- Deep knowledge and understanding of clients and markets
- Deep knowledge and understanding of client management in underwriting context Advanced ability to recognise trends and understand impact on underwriting
- Negotiation skills, strong teamwork skills and a willingness to share knowledge
- Excellent communication skills (written and spoken)
- Solution-oriented with a focused, proactive and efficient work style
