Disability and Underwriting Manager

The incumbent will be tasked with shaping thought leadership, intelligence gathering, training, building and leading the disability management and underwriting teams.
The person must be mature, agile, a team player with a strong medical background, good commercial and leadership skills. He/she will need to understand the effect of economic, health, social and political risk, and its relationship with insurance business risk. The individual will also need to have a thorough understanding of the Employee Benefits risk space with particular on all occurrence risk products.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the strategic direction of RML and provide alignment of distribution, disability management, underwriting and strategic initiatives to business strategy
- Lead the disability management and underwriting teams with overall responsibility for all medical related insurance aspects of the business
- Product design and pricing - provide appropriate medical and disability risk input in the design of products and pricing of schemes to ensure competitive and well-informed offerings to clients.
- Design, develop and propose best practices around disability management and underwriting needs for RML.
- Drive medical and technological innovation for RML, particularly in the claims management, underwriting area.
- Engage on all health/medical related matters with key stakeholders, including the business development, actuarial and operations teams, in addition to other internal forums within the Group
- Perform claim assessment and underwriting activities
- Produce appropriate reports for internal management, Risk & Compliance committee and other internal forums.
- Establish and drive wellness programmes and initiatives for employers with the aim to improve overall wellbeing for members and value for employers.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with third party service providers including, nursing services, medical labs and any other entity required as part of the disability and underwriting teams.
- Coaching and Development of a team of experts adept at claims assessment and underwriting for the business.
Degree in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, or a related field
At least 15 years of proven functional experience in disability claims management and underwriting in a Group risk business within South Africa of which at least 10 years on management level.
Experience relevant to long and/or short-term insurance industry
Detailed knowledge of best practices, tools and techniques relating to claim assessments, management, and underwriting
Proven track record of developing and implementing strategic initiatives and building strong and knowledgeable teams with the disability and underwriting space.
A knowledge/understanding of the (re)insurance industry (preferably South Africa, but global knowledge will be acknowledged), business management skills.
Proven ability to lead a diverse team.
Strong & demonstratable people skills.
