Lead: Aviation Safety

**Job Purpose**:
The role is responsible for promoting and maintaining aviation safety through managing the activities of Technical/ Flight/ Cabin Safety and Ground Safety, as well as having oversight of safety management and compliance in all operational departments to ensure their full compliance with national and international aviation safety standards and requirements. The role is responsible for promoting aviation safety by means of training, communication and promotions as required by the regulators.

**Principal Accountabilities**:

- Provide input to the design of the Safety Strategy and implement strategy within area/s of responsibility
- Develop short, medium and long term Aviation Safety Strategy with relevant stakeholders for Aviation Safety aligned to regulators’ requirements and ensure all aspects of the strategy are covered by the Safety Management System Manual (SMSM)
- Manage implementation of the Aviation strategy and plans within area of control
- Plan, manage and control budget within Aviation Safety
- Manage the implementation of Governance and Risk Management policies, processes and systems
- Manage and monitor implementation of the safety programme
- Communicate and co-operate with relevant sections in the organisation regarding safety matters
- Co-ordinate with other departments to ensure Aviation Safety and Compliance is informed of pertinent safety issues
- Provide regular and timely information to all stakeholders regarding aviation safety trends to facilitate decision and policy making and operational excellence with regards to aviation safety
- Comply with the standards relating to the conveyance of dangerous goods as prescribed in SA-CATS-DG
- Responsible for the investigation, analysis and identification of root causes of all hazards or the contributing factors of incidents and accidents identified under the Safety Management System and ensure SAA has adequate mitigation measures in place
- Responsible for the investigation of all incidents and accidents involving SAA aircraft, equipment and property under CARs Part 12, as well as the completion and distribution of all accident, incident and occurrence reports
- Comply with the SACAA “The Technical Standards relating to regulations 121.04.2; 127.04.2; 135.04.2
- Responsible for safety management and compliance in Technical/ Flight/ Cabin Safety and Ground Safety
- Promote Safety by means of training, communication and promotions as required by the regulators

**Qualifications & Experience**:

- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management System (SMS) or related field at NQF level 7
- At least 5-7 years’ experience in aviation safety management, of which at least 3 years must have been in the management of an aviation safety management system (as per ICAO SMSM document 9895, AN474 second edition)
- Proven aviation safety auditing experience is essential
