- Engage with Colleagues and Stakeholders to ensure long-term credibility and enhance its reputation and excellence as an objective, independent, internationally significant, marine and coastal research institute
- Help develop and implement a strategic plan regarding marine and coastal research, science engagement & communication and capacity building
- Track the portfolio’s progress on achieving the strategic plan, by identifying potential opportunities and challenges for the division, to formulate and implement the division’s annual operational plans
- Develop, source funding for, and implement a portfolio of marine and coastal research projects that achieves their strategic objectives
- Report on the portfolio’s business risks and identify ways in which to mitigate them
- Ensure that all full-time and contract employees, students, interns, and consultants associated with the portfolio undertake their activities
- Ensure that all the Company’s policies are always implemented
- Ensure that all risks relating to the portfolio’s activities are assessed and suitable Standard Operating and Emergency Procedures are designed and implemented to ensure optimal organizational performance
- Conduct regular reviews of the portfolio’s financial statements and analyse all costs, ensuring that all portfolio expenditure is sufficiently funded
- Undertake fundamental and applied marine and coastal research and scientific consultancies of the highest international standard
- Produce scientific output in accredited books, journals, proceedings, technical reports and through presentations at scientific forums such as conferences and symposia
- Monitor, interpret and achieve all the portfolio’s key performance indicators, and ensure each
- Build capacity in marine and coastal science in KZN, South Africa and the Western Indian Ocean region by identifying projects and supervising appropriate postgraduate students
- Take part in science engagement with role players and Stakeholders, through formal forums, membership of decision-making bodies, public presentations, traditional and social media, commenting on policy, strategic plans, environmental assessments, etc
- Support the academic community by reviewing scientific manuscripts, reports, proposals, etc.
- Provide the Director & senior management with the reports, information updates and support needed to perform their duties successfully

**Minimum Requirements**
- **PhD in biological, natural resources or environmental sciences, preferably with a marine focus**:

- **A sound research track record, with several scientifically recognised and peer evaluated publications produced, and a proven ability to attract research funding**:

- **Experience managing a research unit or as the principal investigator for at least one large, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research program**:

- A track record of active science engagement, through participation and contribution in scientific, government, public and other forums
- Primary Supervisor of several MSc and/or PhD graduates
