Duties/Pligte
**The Special Advisor is expected to**:

- Research and advise on issues and topics as required by the DVC;
- Deal with enquiries and usually complex responsibilities as delegated by the DVC, including special project management related to university-wide initiatives which contribute to the DVC's role and functions;
- Contribute to maintaining and enhancing the reputation of the DVC's office through professional, friendly, timely, diplomatic, and respectful interactions internally and externally; Refrain from interfering in the leadership, administration and management of the responsibility center;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the DVC as needed.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- PhD / Doctorate;
- Five years' relevant experience in a leadership role in a higher education academic environment;
- Knowledge and understanding of the national and international higher education policy environment;
- Enjoys recognition as a competent expert at national level in higher education;
- Demonstrates as progressive leader who is supportive of the South African higher education priorities such as quality, equity, student support for success, programme renewal, decolonisation of the curriculum, internationalisation, scholarship of teaching and transformation;
- A proven higher education track record in an advisory role which shows suitability for the post;
- In the context of institutional culture, demonstrate a nuanced understanding of institutional transformation, as well as a high-level appreciation of the requirements for managing change effectively within the higher education sector and in a university context;
- Understanding conceptual and technical matters relevant to the divisions reporting to the DVC, including the Division for Student Affairs, the Division for Learning and Teaching Enhancement and the Equality Unit;
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with a variety of personalities in a diplomatic manner and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with culturally diverse internal and external stakeholders;
- Complex writing skills;
- Organisational and administrative skills;
- The ability to work independently to agreed outcomes and deliverables;
- Proactive and keeping the DVC well-informed of higher education developments and activities;
- Conceptual, analytical, synthetic and problem-solving skills;
- The ability to prioritise tasks, multi-task, and deliver on deadlines with attention to detail and quality;
- Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office;
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling
- Prior relevant high-level higher education advisor experience would be an advantage.
