**CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER (CFO)**

**(CAPE TOWN OFFICE)**

**5-year contract position**

The South African Medical Research Council (**SAMRC**)** is a globally recognised and respected medical research institution whose vision is to build a healthy nation through research and innovation.

**SAMRC will ensure an appropriate handover period to ensure the smooth functioning of the entity.**

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE**:

- Strategic leadership, support and insight on fundamental financial management challenges
- Developing, implementing and managing strategies and policies which will impact positively on the financial performance of the MRC
- Ensuring the accurate execution of functions in compliance with relevant legislation
- Overall accountability for all income and expenditure (government and non-governmental)
- Overall accountability for asset management
- Establishment and maintenance of accounting and financial records and systems
- Continuous and timely production of financial management information
- Compiling annual financial statements in accordance with Standards of Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP)
- Assist in the review and negotiation of all financial contracts and agreements
- Responsibility for adherence to the limits and provisions detailed in the delegation of authority and supply chain management policy
- Development, implementation and oversight of Risk Management
- Performing statutory duties and exercising delegated authority.
- Any other responsibilities as may arise due to operational and strategically required

**KEY REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE**:

- Chartered Accountant (SA) with 10 years’ experience at Executive level.
- Registration with South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)
- Sound understanding and experience of GRAP, the Public Finance Management Act and Treasury Regulations
- Excellent competencies and capabilities in all aspects of the public sector competency framework for senior managers
- Experience and/or knowledge of policy development and strategic planning processes
- Experience in process optimisation and efficiency improvements without compromising compliance with relevant legislation
- Experience in the management and implementation of major projects
- Proven track record in a medium to large size functioning organisation operating in a globally competitive environment
- Proven track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams
- Public and private sector experience within SA

The SAMRC offers a highly competitive, all-inclusive remuneration package, which is negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.
