Job Profile Summary

ERM is seeking a driven Process Safety & Technical Risk Managing Consultant to join our Safety Service team.

Our clients face increasing demands to enhance their environmental, health & safety ('EHS') performance and mitigate operational risks. Our Safety Services team assists clients in navigating these challenges, transforming EHS activities from a necessary expense into a value-generating function. The ideal candidate will possess robust technical expertise in technical risk, process safety, and related sustainability fields, with a passion for collaborating with clients and supporting consulting teams in delivering complex projects. Job Responsibilities

As a Managing Technical Consultant, your primary focus will be to ensure the successful execution of ERM projects. The consultant should have experience in some or all of the following areas:

  • Conducting Process Safety audits (due diligence, compliance, verification).
  • Developing and implementing Process Safety management and compliance programs.
  • Facilitating Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs).
  • Compiling Bow Tie analyses and reports using Bowtie XP or similar tools.
  • Performing Risk Assessments (Baseline; FMECA; Issue-based; SIL; FTA's; Haz-ids; LOPA's; Fire Risk Reviews, etc.) across various industrial sectors such as Mining, Power, Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals, Oil and Gas, Food and Beverage, etc.
  • Understanding Behavioral and Human Factors safety concepts.
  • Familiarity with South African and broader African health and safety legal requirements.
  • Managing and analyzing risk data.
  • Experience in resource efficiency and optimization across diverse industrial sites.
  • Working knowledge of climate change services (carbon footprinting, life cycle assessments, climate risk, etc.).

As a Managing Technical Consultant, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing or coordinating medium to large-scale projects or components of larger multidisciplinary or global projects, collaborating closely with our European and other global Safety & Risk teams as well as our offices across Africa.
  • Delivering multiple project tasks or components effectively.
  • Supervising project teams and mentoring junior staff.
  • Understanding the interconnections between ERM services and policies and their application within clients' business models.
  • Establishing strong working relationships with clients through effective project delivery.
  • Developing and expanding Safety & Risk services in South Africa and Africa.
  • Engaging in client liaison, detailed proposal preparation and review, project execution, and management.
  • Providing client training and technical assistance while adhering to ERM Southern Africa's and Global Risk's policies and procedures.

You will be part of our interdisciplinary and international team, collaborating with ERM offices across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Travel within South Africa and occasionally to global destinations may be required to fulfill some of the above responsibilities.

Job Requirements

  • An Engineering Degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering; qualifications in Fire Risk/Engineering will be advantageous.
  • Comprehensive experience in all aspects of Process Safety, including QRA's, HAZOPs, Behavioral Safety, and Human Factors programs, as well as risk management concepts such as baseline risk assessments and risk control strategies.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in Process Safety/Technical Risk/Fire Risk fields post-qualification.
  • At least 4 years of this experience should be in a technical risk PSM-related consulting environment with a proven track record.
  • Experience in resource efficiency and climate change initiatives.
  • Strong commercial acumen, business development, and project management skills.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in utilizing data and technology to support clients with safety solutions.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Ability to perform under pressure.
