Safety, Health and Environment Job Description

Reporting to the ESG, Risk and Compliance Manager, this role is responsible for implementing, coordinating, and maintaining the company's efforts in adhering to legal compliance in the areas of Occupational Health and Safety, Fire Defence, Security, Environmental Control, Emergency Preparedness, Training, and Liability.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a SHE system
  • Follow instructions from the ESG, Risk and Compliance Manager
  • Attend to SHE-related functions and ensure tasks are completed on time
  • Assist in driving the safety, health, environmental, and risk management strategy for the company's operations
  • Work with the ESG, Risk and Compliance Manager to identify key trends, shifts, and issues related to SHE that impact strategy and implementation
  • Conduct induction training for all staff and contractors annually
  • Keep records of SHE-related records for audit purposes
  • Ensure fire safety checks and related records are maintained
  • Conduct OHS inspections and submit reports
  • Organize group SHE activities, such as toolbox talks and green area meetings
  • Coordinate H&S committee meetings and maintain minutes
  • Drive a culture of safety ownership at all levels of the organization
  • Identify areas of risk and develop measures to eliminate, reduce, and control them
  • Facilitate compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards
  • Inspect and evaluate the environment, equipment, and processes to ensure compliance
  • Provide advice on safety-related matters
  • Ensure prompt reporting, investigation, and remedial action of OHS incidents
  • Coordinate and maintain emergency teams, such as fire marshals and first aiders
  • Identify risks and correct hazards
  • Assist with audits and ensure corrective actions are taken
  • Assist with initiating projects to deal with unsafe working practices
  • Ensure contractor compliance with company rules and regulations
  • Arrange for quotes, purchase, and control the distribution of PPE
  • Make arrangements for fire drills and emergency drills
  • Assist with developing and implementing fire defence procedures
  • Assist with arranging AIA surveys, external audits, and testing
Authority:
  • Make decisions without supervisor/manager's approval
  • Provide advice on SHE-related risks and mitigation
  • Take proactive action toward risk mitigation
  • Take swift action toward risk mitigation in reaction to risks that have materialised
  • Conduct OHS inspections and reporting results
  • Take corrective action to mitigate OHS risks
  • Recommendations to supervisor/manager
  • New SHE-related methodologies and training opportunities
  • Suggesting changes to the SHE system
Requirements:
  • Relevant tertiary qualification, such as SAMTRAC, Safety Management National Diploma, NEBOSH, or equivalent
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft – Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Good working knowledge of SHE-related legislation
  • Good working understanding of implementing SHE-related processes and systems
  • Hazard analysis and incident investigation
  • Gathering and interpreting data and effective reporting
  • Willingness to learn
  • Good communication, conflict resolution, working well under pressure, attention to detail, impartial
