We are currently seeking a Cost Estimator in our Johannesburg office who is self-driven and committed to establishing Turner & Townsend as the leading consultancy in the industry. Reporting to the Lead Estimator, this role involves delivering projects, securing new clients, maintaining existing relationships, and promoting the core values of Turner & Townsend.

As a Cost Estimator, you will join our mining division to provide services that assist our clients in formulating strategies for successful business solutions prior to project approval, ensuring confidence in project delivery, and facilitating effective project management and knowledge transfer.

Position Overview

We are in search of a Cost Estimator responsible for generating estimates by developing, reviewing, and agreeing on the scope, basis, and methodology for each estimate undertaken. You will review estimates according to the established methodology, ensuring quality and accuracy, and determining appropriate contingency levels while maintaining project historical data and trends.

Key Responsibilities

The position requires extensive experience and a deep understanding of standard concepts in cost control and estimating, with a strong emphasis on data analysis and benchmarking, ideally within the mining sector. The ideal candidate is an analytical, data-driven problem solver capable of building collaborative partnerships essential for defining and implementing project control procedures related to mining initiatives. Initiate new projects during the earliest design phases to ensure adherence to program controls. Collaborate with project teams to align change management and schedule management with standardized work breakdown structures and estimating processes. Evaluate detailed construction estimates from contractors at various design stages and provide informed recommendations. Assist in developing high-level conceptual estimates to support early property development planning prior to contractor engagement. Contribute to the creation and maintenance of a library of templates, best practices, and procedures for all estimating activities. Maintain the benchmarking database and project coding structures. Support business unit leadership with ad-hoc cost performance studies, labor rate assessments, market analysis, and other estimating and project control functions as directed. Demonstrate the ability to estimate at conceptual, programming, and detailed levels. Provide insights into value engineering and options analysis.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications & Experience

7-10 years of experience as a cost estimator in the mining, process, and infrastructure sectors. Bachelor's and/or postgraduate degree in engineering, construction, or a quantitative field. Familiarity with mining production and cost metrics. Knowledge of mining processes and operations. Proven estimating experience in large-scale and complex projects, including but not limited to civil, structural, and mechanical, electrical, and piping disciplines. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Experience with various cost estimating tools. Working knowledge of CCS is preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in reports and presentations. A team player with demonstrated professional and interpersonal skills, capable of interfacing with all organizational levels, clients, and vendors. Detail-oriented and action-focused with strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask. Capacity to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities. Professional registration is an added advantage.
