We are currently seeking a Cost Estimator to join our Johannesburg office. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and dedicated to establishing Turner & Townsend as the leading consultancy in the industry. Reporting to the Lead Estimator, this role will involve delivering projects, securing new clients, maintaining existing relationships, and promoting the core values of Turner & Townsend.
Our workforce is the cornerstone of our success, and as a Cost Estimator, you will be part of our mining unit, providing services that assist our clients in formulating strategies for successful business solutions prior to project sanctioning, ensuring confidence in project delivery, managing and controlling projects effectively, and facilitating knowledge capture and transfer.
Position Overview
We are in search of a Cost Estimator responsible for generating estimates by developing, reviewing, and agreeing on the scope, basis, and methodology for each estimate undertaken. You will review estimates according to the established methodology, ensuring quality and accuracy, and determining appropriate contingency levels while preparing and maintaining project historical data and trends.
Key Responsibilities
The position requires extensive experience and deep knowledge of standard concepts in cost control and estimating, with a strong emphasis on data analysis and benchmarking, ideally within the mining sector. The successful candidate will be an analytical, data-driven problem solver capable of fostering consultative and collaborative partnerships to define and implement project control procedures related to mining projects. Initiate new projects during the earliest design phases to ensure adherence to program controls. Collaborate with project teams to align change management and schedule management with standardized work breakdown structures and estimating processes. Evaluate detailed construction estimates from contractors at various design stages and provide informed recommendations. Assist in developing high-level conceptual ROM estimates to support early property development planning efforts prior to contractor engagement. Contribute to the creation and maintenance of a library of templates, best practice standards, and procedures for all estimating activities within project teams. Maintain the program benchmarking database and all project coding structures. Support business unit leadership with ad-hoc cost performance studies, labor rate assessments, market analysis, and other estimating/project control functions as directed. Capable of estimating at conceptual, programming, and detailed levels. Provide insights into value engineering and options analysis.Qualifications
Required Qualifications & Experience
7-10 years of experience as a cost estimator in the mining, process, and infrastructure sectors. Bachelor's and/or postgraduate degree in engineering, construction, or a quantitative field. Understanding of mining production and cost metrics. Knowledge of mining processes and operations. Proven estimating experience in large-scale and complex projects, including Civil, Structural, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Piping). Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Experience with various cost estimating tools. Familiarity with CCS is preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in report writing and presentations. A team player with demonstrated professional and interpersonal skills, capable of interfacing with all organizational levels, clients, and vendors. Detail-oriented and action-driven with exceptional organizational skills and the ability to multitask. Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
