Position Overview

The Senior Process Control Engineer is responsible for providing technical support and overseeing medium-term improvement initiatives on the SME site.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • BTech/BSc degree with a focus on Electrical/Control Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a Heavy/Industrial Industry Environment (essential).
  • At least 5 years of experience in a Control Engineering capacity is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience in:
    • PLC (IEC and/or DCS and/or microcontroller controls), PLC/DCS Programming, Field Instrumentation, and Analyzers.
    • Electrical drives – DOL & VFD Control Systems, Commissioning & Fault Finding.
    • Industrial Ethernet Communications – Profinet/ModbusTCP/IEC61850, Profibus Networking and Communications.
    • MS Windows operating systems – Server & Client.
    • Design, Implementation, and Management of Managed Ethernet Network Systems for Operational Technology (OT) systems.
    • Process Data Historians, Implementation/Optimization of Process Alarm Systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct control system audits, health assessments, lifecycle planning, and data analysis for optimization.
  • Engage in the MoC process for projects requiring modifications to control systems.
  • Provide control system support for significant capital projects.
  • Assist in investigations following major incidents and production deviations.
  • Coordinate and plan interface upgrades.
  • Lead or assist with HAZOP and PHR studies.
  • Develop process control strategies and standards to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Identify control improvement opportunities and collaborate with process control and operations teams to implement enhancements and resolve issues.
  • Manage medium to long-term projects in line with project management principles.
  • Support Operational Excellence initiatives including API, Greenhouse Gas, and Centre of Excellence programs.
  • Assist production and maintenance teams with troubleshooting using established methodologies such as RCFA, FMEA, DMAIC, and LSS.
  • Oversee the technical development and mentorship of Process Control Engineers and Professionals-in-Training.
  • Ensure regular development and maintenance of process documentation.

Process Efficiency:

  • Execute work in alignment with established strategies, plans, and production objectives. Ensure optimal resource utilization, taking responsibility for equipment selection, metallurgical process design, and project life cycles.

Safe and Healthy Work Environment:

  • Participate in safety initiatives, ensure HAZOPS are conducted, maintain a healthy environment, and comply with SHEQ and technical standards.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Initiate continuous improvement opportunities that lead to cost-saving measures. Stay informed about advancements in the field, conduct research to propose process changes, and act as a champion for Business Improvement processes.

Customer and Client Relationship Management:

  • Establish, monitor, and update a stakeholder register for each project phase. Uphold and promote the Tronox image, providing professional advisory support services.

Project Management:

  • Set up, monitor, and update project schedules, risk registers, and expense control tools. Compile detailed project scopes of work and conduct post-completion audits.
