Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

The Field Operations Specialist is responsible for the execution of field-related inspection activities in accordance with standard procedures, industry guidelines, and/or client instructions. This role requires providing an independent service to customers, ensuring that all duties are performed accurately and with the highest level of quality at all times.

Responsibilities

  1. Sampling of products from various sources, including road/rail tankers, terminal tanks, ship tanks, drums, etc.
  2. Labeling of samples, registering, and issuance to the laboratory.
  3. Tank gauging to determine the level of product and temperature in storage tanks and issuance of dip sheets and cleanliness certificates.
  4. Inspection to determine the cleanliness of containers, including road/rail/ISO-tanks, storage tanks, etc.
  5. Inspection to determine the cleanliness of pipelines (line pigging) and issuance of line cleanliness certificates.
  6. Monitoring of road tankers while loading vessels and obtaining weight certificates for each delivery. Inspection of empty road tankers thereafter.
  7. Sealing of valves and hatches, including pipeline/tank valves and road/rail tanker valves and hatches.
  8. Recording of inspection data/results in a field notebook, accurately and neatly, to ensure easy traceability of data/results.
  9. Completion of inspection certificates and reports accurately and neatly.
  10. Continuous updating of the Job File with relevant inspection reports or results.
  11. Advising immediate supervisors or managers of changes/events that could have a detrimental effect on the Company or business operations.
  12. Crude tank farm operations, sealing/isolating pipeline valve systems, sealing tanks, gauging, sampling, water draining, water cut, and issuance of dip sheets. Maintaining a log of tank farm events, delays, anomalies, and deviations and reporting these timeously to the respective surveyor/terminal personnel.
  13. Witnessing the packing of containers (drums, etc.) as per client or internal procedures or other specific requirements.
  14. Manning the road tanker loading of bitumen onto bitumen bulk vessels as per internal working procedures.
  15. Recording and collating weighbridge certificates, inspecting road tankers.
  16. Ensuring sample and inspection equipment are clean and in working condition before and after use.
  17. Maintaining the sample store room by placing samples for storage systematically and removing samples for safe disposal.
  18. Recording samples being placed in and being taken out of the storeroom in the sample register provided.
  19. Ensuring Company vehicles are handled properly and kept in clean, presentable condition.
  20. Performing all inspections (SHE vehicles, etc.) assigned to themselves.
  21. Performing general housekeeping on the facility as well as regular housekeeping on motor vehicles.
  22. Completing all CBT training registered with, within the required time period.
  23. Adhering to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  24. Performing any other reasonable tasks assigned by direct line managers.

Specific Authorities

  1. Cessation of the use of any equipment deemed to constitute a safety hazard or entry to hazardous environments without necessary knowledge and protection, and reporting the situation to higher authority for action.
  2. Cessation of work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and reporting the situation to higher authority for action.
  3. Initiation of a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified, or when nonconformity is identified.

Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum academic qualification is Grade 12 with Maths & Science.
  • A higher education in Chemical Engineering or Instrumentation would be advantageous.
  • Valid driver's license.

Experience

  • Minimum of 12 months plant operations (all types of plant operations-manual, automated, or plant panel operations, or.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in field inspection activity (sampling, gauging of tanks, temperature measurements, etc.).
  • If the incumbent is new in the industry, background and qualifications shall be a criterion.
