Job Summary:
The Black Sash is seeking a dedicated and passionate Human Rights Advocate to join our team as a Community Development Specialist. In this role, you will play a crucial part in promoting socio-economic rights, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children.

About the Role:
This position involves conducting regional human rights work as outlined in our organisational Strategic Plan and Programmes (Rights Education & Training, citizen-based monitoring, and Advocacy in Partnership). You will work closely with civil society organisations to build strong relationships, initiate new partnerships, and ensure effective implementation of programmes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Programme Implementation: Work collaboratively with community and civil society organisations to implement programmes effectively.
  • Rights Education and Training: Deliver educational workshops, training courses, queue education, public displays, and events to promote human rights awareness.
  • Community Capacity Building: Grow and expand the capacity of community partners to implement the Community Based Monitoring (CBM) model(s) and other research-related tasks.
  • Advocacy: Collaborate with civil society organisations and community groups to conduct advocacy actions that effect systemic, legislative, policy, and delivery changes.
  • Data Management: Accurately capture data on the Zoho database to generate statistics and quality information for follow-up advocacy, organisational, and donor reports.

Requirements:
  • Qualifications: Accredited 2-year National Paralegal Diploma or relevant Higher Certificate/ Degree including BA, BA Law, and BA Social Work and Adult Education Diploma or Certificate.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights, International Human Rights Convention, updated knowledge of laws and policies relevant to human rights protection, understanding of government spheres, departments, and agencies, and civil society networks.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Good written and verbal communication skills in English and at least one predominant regional language, ability to use own initiative to research information, interviewing, listening, recording, analytical thinking, report and letter writing, presentation, facilitation, training, conflict resolution, project and time management, public speaking, and computer literacy.
