About the Role

The Senior Data Steward will play a crucial role in driving data quality and adherence to data governance requirements on a day-to-day basis.

This role will incorporate processes, policies, and guidelines for administering Old Mutual's data in compliance with policy and/or regulatory obligations, ensuring high data quality.

The Senior Data Steward will review and, if necessary, enhance the information provided for the creation or maintenance of data.

Data stewards must attend the Data Stewards Forum (DSF) and actively participate.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Embed good data practice within business units and functions, and champion a data and customer-focused culture within Old Mutual.
  2. Establish processes and procedures for data management and information governance.
  3. Adhere to regulations and policies.
  4. Participate and contribute to the DSF and own data outcomes per Business Unit/Domain.
  5. Ensure decisions made in the Data Governance Board (DGB) are implemented in their business units/domains.
  6. Confirm that business unit/domain concerns regarding data are brought to the DGB and satisfactorily resolved.
  7. Drive data maturity improvements in Old Mutual.
  8. Establish and lead the segment Data Management forum.
  9. Lead the development and execution of the Data Strategy in Personal Finance.
  10. Promote ethical data handling practices.

Operational Oversight

  1. Oversees the life cycle of assigned data domain, while maintaining an overall perspective of the integration and impact of data with other data domains.
  2. Explores the nexus across Data Architecture and other respective architectural disciplines in the business to discover opportunities for improvement or expose gaps and risks.
  3. Defines and implements policies and procedures for the day-to-day operational and administrative management of systems and data — including the intake, storage, processing, and transmission of data to internal and external systems.
  4. Accountable to define and document data and terminology in a relevant glossary, ensuring that each critical data element has a clear definition and is still in use.
  5. Communicates information management and governance standards to all relevant stakeholders, and confirms their implementation within assigned domains, projects, and/or business units.
  6. Works with the relevant teams to establish procedures for detection and correction of data-quality issues and collaborates to establish standards, guidelines, processes, procedures, and internal controls for the quality of critical data elements within Old Mutual.
  7. Engages in the ongoing and detailed evaluation of data quality, the identification of anomalies and discrepancies, and the contribution of expertise to understand the root cause and implement corrective measures from a people, process, and system perspective.
  8. Ensures and tracks that all activities in their business unit/domain happen as per design – in line with agreed data management and governance standards and principles, including data quality, master & reference data, metadata, and data security.
  9. Facilitates and documents the definition of consistent business and data rules aligned to defined standards.
  10. Ensures the implementation of defined standards through embedding in existing/new business processes.
  11. Executes consistent monitoring and reporting of adherence to defined standards.
  12. Highlights any existing gaps between the defined application of business rules and current state and facilitates the process of closing identified gaps with the respective domains, projects, and/or business units.
  13. Collaborates with the broader data stewardship community to ensure that new rules and standards are consistently applied to enterprise data.
  14. Performs testing to verify validity, quality, and appropriateness of third-party acquired data.

Leadership and Management

Leadership and management responsibilities include:

  1. Establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with business and corporate stakeholders.
  2. Ensuring stakeholders are consulted and kept informed of issues and advances in data management practice in Old Mutual.
  3. Participating and providing input to the DSF.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. A matric with a relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., Information Studies and IT Management).
  2. At least 5 years of experience in data practice and/or analysis.
  3. Relevant data management certification.
  4. A minimum of 8 years demonstrated, relevant experience in the insurance or financial services industry, preferably in a data-intensive function or role, added advantage.
  5. A postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
  6. Knowledge of data modelling, data integration, and data configuration is advantageous.
