About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Accounting Lead Specialist to join our team at FirstRand Bank Limited. As a key member of our advisory services team, you will play a critical role in providing technical accounting expertise and support to stakeholders across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of our Group Advisory Services function, ensuring seamless delivery of technical accounting knowledge and advisory services to finance and business stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders to manage expectations, share knowledge, and create buy-in across the IFRS technical and finance community.
  • Interpret, communicate, and advise on accounting standards and disclosures throughout the Group, ensuring consistency of application and reporting standards.
  • Perform functions related to the preparation for adoption and implementation of new accounting standards and updated guidance.
  • Support the Co-Heads in integrating technical accounting project outcomes into business as usual processes and systems.
  • Liaise with external auditors as necessary.
  • Review and finalize drafted reports to the Audit Committee.
  • Lead the coordination and preparation of comment letters to the IASB on a timely basis.
  • Create, implement, and maintain IFRS technical accounting group policies, staying up-to-date with developments in both local industry and IFRS.
  • Review and maintain accounting issues logs, ensuring documented conclusions regarding key accounting judgment areas.
  • Prepare and present accounting technical updates and industry developments to finance teams.
  • Work with the Co-Head and other team members to integrate policies into reporting processes and systems.
  • Review interim and annual financial statements to ensure disclosures align with accounting standards, JSE Listing, and Companies Act requirements.
  • Manage performance of team members in area of responsibility against expected individual and team delivery targets.
  • Manage the allocation of work between team members.
  • Manage performance moderation, disciplinary action, recognition, and retention processes in line with HR policies and procedures.
  • Ensure clear contracting and assessment of performance expectations in line with identified objectives, enabling a learning and growth culture.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and regular feedback to employees to improve performance and implement performance improvement initiatives.
  • Manage and coach behavior within the team that builds rewarding relationships, encourages innovation, and promotes exceptional customer service.
  • Ensure relevant resolution of conflict and respond to any complaints or concerns.
  • Build relationships that allow for managing expectations, sharing knowledge, and creating buy-in across the IFRS technical and finance community.
  • Build and sustain collaborative working relationships with relevant peers and stakeholders to achieve productivity synergies.
  • Participate in specialist communities of practice and contribute positively to own and organizational knowledge improvement.

  • Review reporting schedules prepared by the group at interim and year-end, relating to technical disclosure schedules, as well as new schedules in the first year of adoption of new accounting standards.
  • Provide thought leadership and expertise to the Co-Heads of IFRS Advisory Service.
  • Gather relevant information (contracts, communications with business) to advise on appropriate accounting treatment in relation to the accounting transaction or query by undertaking accounting research and preparing technical accounting memos.
  • Identify interconnected problems, determine their impact, and use to develop best-fit alternatives, driving best-practice solutions.
  • Engage in accounting research and preparation of technical accounting memos.
  • Review technical accounting memos drafted by IFRS Advisory Services Managers and other Leads.
  • Review, and where necessary, participate in the Group's preparation of financial statements, including footnote preparation, support of disclosures, research for presentations, etc.
  • Assist with the preparation and presentation of accounting updates and training on IFRS.
