In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Divisions, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, and Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked, and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes, and to interrogate social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

The Dynamics of Agrofood Systems and Innovation (DASI) sub-unit within EEE, is currently undertaking a series of research projects such as the global **_'One Food' _**initiative, **_Innovation for Local Economic Development (ILED)_** and the**_ Integrated Rural Development Sector Strategy
- Baseline Survey. _**This workstream promotes a transdisciplinary approach to evidence generation for equitable quality of life outcomes for all. Our transdisciplinary studies contribute to ecological and transformative food value chains without harming the environment and investigate options for growing and harnessing the societal benefits of equitable innovations.

**Chief Researcher (1 position)**

**Minimum Requirements**:

- A Master’s degree in Economics or in a related social sciences field (a PhD in Economics obtained in last year will be a distinct advantage);
- At least 3 years of relevant work experience in an academic research environment;
- At least one (3) peer reviewed publication (journal article or book chapter);
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Appropriate quantitative and qualitative methodological skills;
- A sound academic record;
- Willingness to learn through hands on engagement in a variety of research projects;
- Ability to work in a team on multidisciplinary research projects;
- Intellectual and personal integrity, a well-developed work ethic, and drive

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Work with a professional research team on all aspects of policy orientated research, including conceptualisation, data collection and analysis, and participation in dissemination of findings;
- Assist with the submission of research proposals for ethical review;
- Conduct and organise literature reviews and other secondary data searches;
- Undertake qualitative and quantitative fieldwork and data analysis;
- Conduct descriptive and inferential analysis of quantitative data;
- Assist with project management tasks in the research environment;
- Contribute to the preparation of peer reviewed academic journal articles, research reports, study protocols, presentations, manuscripts and research grant proposals; and
- Participate in structured research trainee mentoring and capacity development activities.
