To lead and inspire a team to deliver balanced product ranges through a customer led process that meets and exceeds customer expectations within the agreed KPI’s. Together with enabling the buying process, The Head of Buying, Trend and Design’s role is to interpret and drive the implementation of relevant global design trends into South African relevant product direction. This role is accountable for overall Design and Product direction as well as leading a team of Buyers and Designers to enable execution.**Job description**
- **Customer**- Ensure the availability of relevant product across departments for the customer.- **Post Season Analysis**
- Review post-season analysis by department / class sub-class (including key performance indicators, SWOT, Pareto and Quadrant analysis) as input in the development of the Group strategy.- **Group Strategy**
- Provide analysis, incorporate design direction and trend to develop the Group Strategy and 1-year operating plan in line with Business Unit strategy.- **Department Operating Plan**
- Review department operational plans to ensure that they deliver into the Group strategy.- Review range plan taking into account customer needs, trend direction, competitive analysis, growth / exit of product categories, determining product objectives that deliver to department operational plan.- **In Season Trading**
- Review weekly and monthly performance with departments and consolidate identified solutions and develop action plan to ensure departmental KPI’s are met and exceeded.- Identify opportunities within the season to maximize profit and grow market share.- Ensure management of Open to Buy (OTB) to maximize sales and minimize markdown.- **Critical Path management**
- Ensure buying & design processes are managed in line with merchandise cycle in order to deliver on time launch and against critical path.- **Design and range construction**
- Lead a team of designers to gather and present seasonal trend research and key shifts, identify opportunities (fabric, silhouette, color, retail opportunity) and formulate action plan (includes preparation activities, KPIs and measure of success)- Lead the team of Designers to deliver design direction in line with Global trends appropriate for the Woolworths customer, through delivering seasonal design briefs, including color pallets, fabric and materials direction, using external and internal resources, incorporating special occasions, collabs etc.- Lead the process in briefing the Design & Buying team on items for each department in line with Group strategy in order to deliver a balanced range within agreed price architecture.- Review monthly themes as well as continuity and volume input items in design brief workshops.- Conduct product review, including financials (subclass and class plans), assortment plan, final product (concept, pre-production or production samples - including packaging) and reconcile assortment plan and financials with strategy.- **Stakeholder Management**
- Lead and identify packaging and ticketing needs in line with marketing/brand and promotional strategy.- Ensure and conduct regular store and competitor visits to understand product performance, assortment balance and customer experience of the range and adjust where appropriate.- **Supplier Management**
- Manage supplier strategy to deliver Group KPI’s in line with sourcing strategy.- Improve margin through effective sourcing and supplier negotiations.- Work together with the Sourcing & Technology teams to maintain the relationships between Design Centres of local and international suppliers as well as external resources i.e. M&S and WGSN.- **Expense Management**
- Set and manage departmental financial and expense budgets in line with group’s budget.- **People Management**
- Develop, motivate, inspire and lead the team to achieve and deliver the group strategy and plans that will ensure high performance through the effective use of the IPM process.- Drive succession planning, EE transformation and develop talent within the teams.**Minimum requirements**
- Relevant 3-year diploma or degree or equivalent cognitive ability
- 10-15 years retail buying & design experience in a Homeware environment is essential (including a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role)
- Proven experience in Supplier negotiations
