FIRST ANIMAL CARETAKER

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:

- Cleaning and disinfecting of the units of the OVARU animals that includes, (but not limited to) farm animals, avian, canine, rabbits, rodents and non-human primates or any other species required according to projects at the OVARU;
- Feeding of animals
- Provide animal care and husbandry
- Assisting researchers, para-veterinarians; and colleagues in other units with the handling of animals during procedures;
- Prepare animals for procedures (e.g., shaving)
- Operating the autoclave; and
- Perform driving duties at OVARU with regards to the collection of animals and food from suppliers when required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- Grade 12;
- One-year experience in housing and caring of laboratory animals as well as weighing and feeding of animals; and
- Proven knowledge of the proper and ethical handling of animals.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES FOR BOTH POSTS (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Physical fit and able;
- Proven knowledge of the correct cleaning procedures (removal of waste, materials used, cleaning of scales, thermometers etc.);
- Thorough knowledge of animals’ species-specific needs;
- Out of hours availability;
- Punctuality;
- Computer literacy; and
- Appropriate language and communication skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Valid driver’s licence;
- Experience in assistance with research projects in general; and
- Knowledge of / experience in the correct handling of an autoclave.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
