First Veterinary Nurse, Onderstepoort Teaching

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Oversee all animal health and welfare aspects of all animals kept by OTAU in line with the SOP per species (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and dogs);
- Keep accurate records of all OTAU animals, including information on reproduction, animal health and utilisation of animals for practical training sessions, experiential training and research;
- Responsible for the implementation of the health, welfare and husbandry Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of OTAU, as prescribed by the Manager: OTAU;
- Responsible for the socialisation of animals;
- Control and keep accurate records of all pharmaceuticals, biologicals and medical supplies kept by OTAU for the use on OTAU animals;
- Assist with general administration (answering telephone calls, taking messages);
- Assist with student practical training; and
- Ensure that biosecurity measures are adhere to.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- Relevant veterinary nursing qualification;
- Two years clinical nursing experience; and
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council as a veterinary nurse.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Knowledge of ethology, handling and nutrition of cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and dogs;
- Excellent language and communication skills;
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team (relate to students, animal caretakers, colleagues and supervisors);
- Organising skills and a strong service orientation;
- Physical mobility and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions;
- Ability to work under pressure and without supervision;
- Knowledge of biosecurity measures and procedures; and
- Strong computer skills (MS Office).

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Competent in the UP financial system; and
- Clinical nursing experience in a wide range of animal species.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
