RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Animal production systems, health and welfare aspects;
- Postgraduate training including recruitment of postgraduate students and supervision thereof;
- Research and publication in scientific journals;
- Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
- Community engagement - participation and supporting student activities;
- Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
- Academic self-development.

**Lecturer**
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- Must have MSc degree in ruminant health and production or veterinary science (if the latter then with a relevant production animal focus), or must be registered currently for such an MSc and able to graduate in 2025;
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
- A minimum of two years of veterinary clinical experience predominantly in Ruminant medicine and Herd health aspects (case log required);
- Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio;
- Strong interest in research and potential to become an established specialist researcher;
- Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.

**Or**
- A BSc Agric (Animal science) degree or equivalent Animal science qualification;
- MSc (Agric) in Animal Science;
- Professional registration with the South African Council of Natural Science Professions;
- Three years of relevant experience in animal science, post obtaining Master’s degree;
- Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio;
- Strong interest in research and potential to become an established specialist researcher;
- Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
- Two or more ISI accredited research based full papers in accredited scientific journals as senior author and/or co
- author in the last three years (First author publications are recommended).

**Senior Lecturer**:

- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
- MSc degree with particular focus on production aspects;
- At least 2 years of tertiary teaching experience;
- Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years’ experience in predominantly Ruminant medicine and Herd health aspects (case log required);
- At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or co-author.

**Or**
- A BSc Agric (Animal science) degree or equivalent Animal science qualification;
- MSc (Agric) in Animal Science and a PhD degree with particular focus on in Animal Science;
- Registration with the South African Council of Natural Science Professions;
- At least 2 years of tertiary teaching experience;
- Nine years of relevant experience (including teaching and research) in Animal science post obtaining a postgraduate degree;
- Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
- Eight or more ISI accredited research based full papers in accredited scientific journals as senior author and/or co-author in the last three years;
- Evidence of successful Master’s supervision and Conference papers delivered.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Proven knowledge and competence relevant to the position;
- Relevant research interest;
- Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
- Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word processing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools;
- Post graduate certificate or degree in Animal welfare aspects;
- Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
- Involvement in research in a relevant field.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
