Our organisation is looking for a manager for our Horse Sanctuary located in Cape Town, to ensure that our horses are well cared for, fed and health checked 7 days a week. It is vital that our horses and ponies are content and that they are treated in a calm, caring and consistent manner so that they in turn are calm and consistent in their behaviour so that they can be safely used in our equine programs. We take in horses and give them a place to live out the rest of their lives.

**Essential Skills**

1. Knowledge of horse farm property management and pasture preservation

2. Horse care and grooming

3. Horse healthcare, management and treatment

4. Experience with horses that may have come from a neglectful background and are still learning how to be good equine citizens.

5. Horse training experience

6. Experience with horse rehabilitation

7. Ability to design, implement and manage individual horse care plans (nutritional, medical, therapeutic, physical and emotional care)

8. Health and Safety in an equestrian environment

9. Strong administration and record keeping ability

10. Purchasing and management of all sanctuary stock

11. Ability to manage stable hands and grounds staff (Work Schedules, general HR)

12. Valid driving license and ability to drive with a horse box trailer

13. Excellent Organizational and operational skills

14. Excellent Computer proficiency

15. Fundraising and donation sourcing experience

16. Partnership development and liaison regarding at risk horses

17. Actively able to seek, identify and secure horses that are in need of care and/or rehoming

**Desirable Skills**

1. Equine therapy and experience

2. Experience working with vulnerable youth

3. Afrikaans and Xhosa proficiency

**Basic duties include**

1. Ensure schedule for Hay/water/feeding is adhered to

2. Good manners training

3. Exercising horses

4. Helping with hay/bedding/food deliveries and general horse care and stable cleaning.

5. Ensuring cleanliness of entire sanctuary

6. Ensuring Health and safety compliance of entire sanctuary at all times

7. Health and medical checks

8. Administering medication

9. Veterinary care appointments

10. Safety check the stables, paddocks and water troughs

11. Ensure safe pick up of horses that have been identified as rescue cases

**Physical Requirements**

This position requires you to be physically able to do any and all the following tasks for reasonable periods:
1. Kneel and squat

2. Work on uneven and sometimes slippery outdoor surfaces

3. Lift and carry hay and buckets of feed (nothing over 7kg)

**Scope of work**

You will report to the Animal Rescue Sanctuary Manager and will work with the other members of our team that live on property and take care of the upkeep and maintenance of the Sanctuary. Weekend and public holiday work will be required, as well as standby duty.

The onsite staff will provide horse care on your off days and will be very involved in the care of our horses. Hours are flexible for the right person.

References will be required.

Contract length: 12 months

**Salary**: R12,500.00 - R20,000.00 per month
