**Head of Professional Affairs** -Health and Medical Industry

**Job Purpose**: To promote, defend and strengthen the professional standing of general/family practitioners and specialists, whether employed in the Public Sector or running a Private practice. To protect a doctor’s fundamental role in health care delivery and to ensure a service that would reflect pride for both doctors and patients.

**Responsibilities**:
**Strategy Development & Implementation**:

- Develop, direct and implement an integrated Professional Affairs strategy, in line with the ORGANISATION’s strategy in order to promote the ORGANISATION and its vision; including assisting both the Board and Members.

[1]drive Committees with their strategies for effective execution of their priorities.
- Work closely with the Chairpersons of the committees and inter alia members, through ensuring implementation of decision made by committees and jointly with the Board.
- Scan the healthcare industry continually, assessing immediate and long-term changes that will impact on the health care industry, specifically the medical profession. Prepare ORGANISATION to be well positioned in terms of policy requirements. This may mean develop new policy documents or reviewing existing one.
- Fully understand the research process and make a call on research activities that can be undertaken internally or in collaboration with relevant external stakeholders. - Scan and fully understand changes in the Private and Public environments and ensure that ORGANISATION is well positioned to respond appropriately to developing changes.
- Scan and understand changes in the Coding environment and position organisation as a thought leader in this space and guard ORGANISATION’s IP. Stakeholder Interaction:

- Liaise with Association’s branches, doctors’ interest groups and other key stakeholders in the healthcare sector through facilitating engagements, making presentations, and building relationships to keep them informed on matters pertaining to healthcare and other related issues.
- To present and represent the Professional Affairs of ORGANISATION’s vision at industrial forums as and when required.
- To interact, consult & negotiate with all medically related external stakeholders to promote, defend and represent the medical profession on a daily basis. (Including but not limited to: medical schemes, administrators, clearing houses, statutory bodies, societies and other allied groups). Business Operation:

- To effectively execute the strategy of body and the Committees in order to continuously protect the interests of the doctors.
- To manage and respond to requests, complaints and other queries relating to Professional Affairs members in a timely manner.
- Take responsibility to identify and ensure effective management of all projects, as identified by the healthcare industry sector constituency and/or committee plans. Commercial Awareness:

- Monitor the healthcare legislation, policies, economics and other developments affecting practitioners in order to: o Communicate or draft relevant comments for submission on behalf of the healthcare sector for the benefit of the doctors. (journal submissions, draft press releases etc.)

Consult and advance corrective recommendations to the CEO and Chairpersons of the committees on issues pertaining to health care in South Africa in general and specifically to professional practice matters such as medical practice management, remuneration of medical practitioners, RWOPS, determination of medical expenses inflation and other related economic needs. Medical Coding System:

- Effectively manage the administration of the procedural coding system for the Healthcare industry
- Play a leading role in the implementation of the Complete CPT for South Africa in the health care industry.
- Ensure all licensees have contracts with regard to the AMA CPT usage.
- Explore commercial activities that can be derived from being the IP holder of the CPT. Health Policy Review:

- Ensure that the research team scans the health policy and legislative environment in South Africa and internationally, on a daily basis, in order to keep ORGANISATION and relevant committees alerted on current developments and best practices in the health policy arena. General:

- To plan, direct and co-ordinate work activities of direct reports to ensure the department achieves the overall strategic objectives.
- Draw up budgets and control expenditures for Professional Affairs Department and the relevant Committees
- Identify areas of concern or threats (financial and other) and notify ORGANISATION timeously, in order to alert the profession and make proposals on how to address these concerns or threats.
- To manage the employee’s performance through: o Facilitating performance reviews and assessment, o developing of direct reports and o efficiently recommending initial discipline and other personnel decisions in the Professional Affairs Department
