Duties/Pligte

**The Director and Deputy Director jointly manage the BER. The Deputy Director reports to the Director and they both report to the Governance Committee, of which they are members. Responsibilities are divided by agreement between them. While the Director takes care of strategic, external affairs, fundraising, and human resource management, the Deputy Director usually deals with internal, everyday implementation and operations. These include, among others**:

- The allocation of resources, scheduling and supervision to deliver continuous and new outputs or contractual obligations on time, as well as within budget;
- Managing the BER's relationship with sponsors, macro-service subscribers and commissioned research providers;
- Alongside the Financial Manager, responsible for budgeting, financial control and reporting, authorisation of expenses, as well as compliance with SU's financial policy;
- Financial and cyber security risk management.

**Together with the Director, the Deputy Director is also responsible for the further improvement of the quality and standing of the BER's research. This includes pursuing academic research excellence, as well as ensuring reputational risk management.**

**In addition to the management duties, the research responsibilities of the Deputy Director could include, amongst others**:

- Conducting research and writing reports on (1) the macroeconomy, (2) the results of the BER's various surveys and/or, (3) as commissioned by clients or self-initiated.
- Providing inputs to and/or taking responsibility for certain areas and/or aspects of the macroeconomic forecast;
- Providing support services, such as doing in-house presentations for clients on the macroeconomy or commissioned research findings;
- Liaising with the media, foreign investors, and other notable visitors such as teams from the World Bank or IMF;
- Mentoring colleagues and trainee economists;
- Independently initiating, managing and completing new services, products and research topics for the Bureau.

**Die Adjunk-direkteur is saam met die Direkteur verantwoordelik vir die bestuur van die BEO. Die Adjunk-Direkteur rapporteer aan die Direkteur en gesamentlik doen hul verantwoording aan die Beheerkomitee van die BEO, waarvan hul lede is. Die dag tot dag bestuur van die BEO word sinvol tussen die Direkteur en Adjunk-Direkteur verdeel. Waar die Direkteur verantwoordelik is vir strategiese aspekte, eksterne betrekkinge, fondswerwing, en menslike hulpbronbestuur, is die take van die Adjunk-Direkteur meer gefokus op die interne werking en operasionele bestuur van die BEO. Hierdie take sluit ondermeer in**:

- Die toedeling van hulpbronne, samestelling van die werksprogram en toesighouding om te verseker dat uitsette op standaard, op tyd en binne begroting gelewer word;
- Bestuur die BEO se verhouding met sy borge, makro-dienskliënte en opdraggewers van navorsingsprojekte;
- Verantwoordelik vir finansiële bestuur, begrotings, en rapportering in samewerking met die Buro se Finansiële Bestuurder;
- Bestuur van finansiële en kuber risiko's en beskerming van data.

**Die Adjunk-Direkteur werk ook nou saam met die Direkteur om die kwaliteit van die BEO se navorsing te bestuur en voortdurend te verbeter en te vernuwe. In hierdie verband is die bestuur en handhawing van die BEO se reputasie asook die strewe na akademiese uitnemendheid van kritieke belang.**

**Benewens die belangrike bestuurstake, het die Adjunk-Direkteur ook sekere verantwoordelikhede in die navorsingsprogram van die Buro. Hierdie kan ondermeer die volgende insluit**:

- Navorsing oor (1) aspekte van die makro-ekonomie, (2) die opskryf van die resultate van die BEO se opnames, (3) onderwerpe van belang vir die BEO, of befonds deur opdraggewers of kliënte;
- Neem verantwoordelikheid vir sekere aspekte van die BEO se makro-ekonomiese vooruitskatting;
- Doen aanbiedings by kliënte oor die makro-ekonomie en/of die bevindings van navorsingsprojekte;
- Skakel met die media, buitelandse beleggers, en vername besoekers soos spanne van die IMF/Wêreldbank;
- Mentorskap van kollegas en leerling-ekonome;
- Afhanklike ontwikkeling van nuwe dienste, produkte en navorsingstemas vir die Buro.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- Master's degree in Economics with specialisation in macroeconomics;
- Proven record of intellectual leadership and management abilities;
- At least four years' experience at a managerial level that demonstrates the ability to work accurately, finish research projects independently and manage a team to complete research projects;
- Proven ability in writing reports and doing presentations for clients in the private and/or public sector;
- Excellent knowledge of macroeconomic relationships and developments in South Africa;
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English;
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain positive relationships with staff, clients, sponsors and external contractors.
