**Position Description - Intern (Communications and M&E)**

**Location: Johannesburg, South Africa**

The Intern will work alongside the program staff to ensure smooth running of activities and will report directly to the Resident Program Director (RPD).

The Intern will be based in the office in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The position is not eligible for remote work.

IRI’s Southern Africa currently has programming in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.

- **Position Overview**_

The Intern will work as part of IRI’s program team and be responsible for contributing to the monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL), communications, and logistics efforts. The Intern will report directly to the Resident Program Director (RPD).

**Primary Functions & Responsibilities**

Under the supervision of the RPD and in collaboration with the HQ Program Team:

- Assists staff with organizing program activities including logistics and other tasks as needed.
- Updates Southern Africa’s Facebook page on a regular basis.
- Assists in MEL efforts, including interview coding, translating reports, and other documents and other tasks as needed.
- Provides administrative support to country teams.
- Contributes to database system and database management, including Telling our Stories.
- Monitors international media outlets and conducts background research on political developments specific to regional portfolio.
- Writes as a contributor to IRI’s blogs and develops and/or edit country one-pagers.
- Assists in researching and gathering information for proposal design, briefing papers, reports, and presentations.
- Attends and contributes to proposal design sessions.
- Supports key record keeping functions, including taking minutes as staff meetings, cleaning databases, program inventory, etc.
- Updates and maintains contact lists.
- Attends (in-person/virtual) informational meetings and participates in professional development opportunities including trainings offered by the organization.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- **Qualifications**_
- Current honours student or recent graduate in Political Science, International Affairs, or related field at an accredited university.
- Interest in Southern Africa / SADC region.
- Excellent verbal and written skills in English.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office especially Excel and Power Point.
- Detail-oriented individual with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to manage time effectively, complete tasks with mínimal oversight, and communicate clearly and consistently in a virtual work environment.
- Familiarity with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- Additional language skills a plus.

**Job Type**: Internship

**Salary**: R4,519.14 - R8,000.00 per month
