UNIT FOR ACADEMIC LITERACY

LECTURER (2 posts)

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Teach mainstream and foundation academic literacy courses in a hybrid mode in different faculties and campuses including Mamelodi campus;
- Contribute to curriculum design in the UAL;
- Coordinate academic literacy courses offered in different faculties and campuses including Mamelodi campus;
- Conceptualize and conduct scholarly research;
- Write and publish articles in accredited and high impact journals;
- Present research at local and international conferences;
- Participate in generating third stream income for the UAL;
- Perform academic administration and management;
- Participate in other departmental activities such as seminars, colloquia and symposia;
- Mentor undergraduate students;
- Supervise/co-supervise Honours and Masters students;
- Collaborate with academic staff in the new School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures;
- Perform other duties as delegated by the Director of UAL.

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
- A Master’s degree in Applied Language Studies, Applied Linguistics or Linguistics or any other relevant field;
- At least three years of teaching experience in Academic Literacy in English or English for Academic Purposes at a higher education institution in South Africa;
- Evidence of publication in an accredited journal or an equivalent recognised output;
- Evidence of conference presentations

**ADDED ADVANTAGES OR PREFERENCES**
- Registration for a PhD and/or significant progress with PhD studies in an area of work related to the teaching and assessment of academic literacy;
- Ability to speak several South African Languages.

**KEY COMPETENCIES**
- Excellent academic writing and reading skills;
- Excellent oral communication skills;
- Mentoring skills;
- Knowledge of key theoretical principles of academic literacy;
- Ability to manage and lecture large classes;
- Familiar with research and scholarship on academic literacy in South Africa
- Ability to assess students using different assessment modes and to provide constructive feedback;
- Ability to work effectively in teams;
- Ability to use Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Blackboard/ClickUp to teach and assess student projects.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
