DEPUTY DIRECTOR: ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Deputy Director: Academic Development is responsible for providing strategic leadership on the academic development of tutors and lecturers in support of the University of Pretoria’s vision, mission, and strategy.

The incumbent will be required to:

- Manage the performance of a variety of specialist units that work directly with the academic development of students and lecturers and/ or conduct research into lecturer and student development, teaching and curricular issues.
- Align academic development strategies for lecturers to the work done in the Department for Education Innovation on the development of teaching.
- Oversee processes related to the development, quality assurance and administration of the institution-wide Student Feedback on Teaching Survey.
- Strategic leadership and management of research and development aimed at advancing higher education at UP, supporting research-led solutions, and enhancing the quality of educational processes and products. (HERI)
- Provide oversight of the various teaching support staff programmes institutionally (e.g. Tutors, teaching assistants, laboratory assistants, demonstrators and assistant lecturers). This includes overseeing, coordinating, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the development, performance and impact of funded teaching assistant programmes at UP, including the training administration and collaboration on the policy related to teaching support staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- A relevant PhD degree e.g. Education, Academic Development;
- A teaching qualification;
- 10 years’ higher education experience involving institutional initiatives for the academic development of students and lecturers;
- At least 5 years of management experience within the higher education academic environment that includes human resource and financial management;
- Knowledge of the higher education policy framework as it relates to teaching, learning and student success;
- Experience of working with donors and other funders;
- Experience of working with teaching, learning or student success projects at a tertiary level.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
