In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ the Research Programmes, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Publishing unit of the Human Sciences Research Council requires the services of a freelance Cover Design Consultant to run a 1-day workshop. This will be a once-off project and will include a specific brief (Please see below in Application Requirements). Time frames and remuneration will be confirmed.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- Proven experience in the design of a range of trade, academic and scholarly book covers
- Proven knowledge of the trade, academic and scholarly market
- The applicant should have managed a Design team
- The applicant should have proven experience of mentoring; running a workshop or lecturing
- Proven knowledge of current publishing cover design trends
- Willingness to travel to a venue in the Western Cape at your own cost

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Develop a 1-day workshop suitable to the Publishing Team’s needs, providing all needed materials
- Be able to do the workshop in person; online or both as some staff is in Cape Town and others are in Pretoria
- Address challenges faced by Publishing’s cover design process
- Provide solid examples of good cover designs
- Use knowledge of the of trade, academic and scholarly audience to guide the Team
- Share their understanding of the elements of designing a book cover (covering all elements)
- Make recommendations relevant to each imprint.
