Recycling Collection Projects

**Introduction**
- Drive efficient and sustainable upstream recycling strategies for PETCO, ensuring sustained supply of feedstock for downstream recycling through strategies that seek to drive effective integration and progressive development of waste collectors.
- Lead PETCO Enterprise Development (ED) projects and execution support team compromising of implementation partners and regional recycling officers.
- Contribute to fostering a positive environment for recycling in South Africa.
- Manage partnerships and relationships with local municipalities and other key collection enabling stakeholders.
- Manage monitoring and reporting and ensure compliance to SA EPR Regulations and collection target achievement of PETCO members.
- Prepare and manage the departmental and project budgets.
- Securing funding future ED initiatives.
- Monitoring and evaluation of projects.
- Play an integral role in municipal engagement.
- Engage with stakeholders at various levels.
- Facilitate collector engagement.
- Provide stakeholder project management support.
**Qualifications and Experience**
- A relevant tertiary qualification at a Degree or Masters level.
- 8 - 10 Years’ relevant working experience, 5 of which should be in management roles within the recycling and waste management sector is essential.

- Ability to understand the economics/drivers behind PET collection and recycling.

**About PETCO**
Recycling, being the process of separating, collecting, and re-manufacturing or converting used or waste products into new materials, is much more than just reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill. With a long list of benefits that aren’t limited to the environment, there are many economic and social advantages to recycling.
Incorporated in 2004, PETCO (the PET Recycling Company NPC), who at the time identified the critical need for post-consumer waste management, started as a voluntary, industry-driven and financed environmental solution for post-consumer Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles. PETCO represented the plastic industry’s effort to self-regulate the recycling of post-consumer PET.
The company and its founders have led innovation by providing industry driven and financed targets that facilitate a circular economy. For 17 years PETCO provided a service to its members by growing the collection and recycling of PET bottles, to levels that are admired by many developed countries, and helped to develop local recycled PET (rPET) capacity. Following the introduction of EPR regulations in South Africa during 2021, producer participation in an EPR Scheme is no longer voluntary. Fortunately, PETCO has many years of experience in establishing a circular economy and was able to ease their members’ transition from voluntary to mandatory EPR.
PETCO’s view, which is aligned with international best practice, is that the producer in the EPR regulations for packaging is either the brand owner of products using the packaging, the retailer in the case of house brands, or the importer of goods contained in packaging.
