Grayston Preparatory School is an independent, co-educational preparatory school with a values-based ethos situated in Sandown, Sandton.

Position Overview

The current Deputy Head of the Foundation Phase will retire at the end of 2025. Grayston is now actively seeking a successor to start in January 2026. The Deputy Head: Foundation Phase is a Senior Management post and forms part of the School Executive Committee. This person is responsible for the running of the Pre-Prep and Junior Prep departments, Grades 000 to Three. The role would require the candidate to teach within the Foundation Phase department and oversee the phase's academic offering and pastoral care programme. The Deputy Head: Foundation Phase should understand the School's ethos and would need to promote, drive and align the School's academic and pastoral care programme with the strategic vision of the School.

Applicants for the Deputy Head: Foundation Phase should fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have a proven track record with a minimum of 3-5 years experience in a leadership role
  • Have the ability to lead by example and manage and mentor a team of experienced teachers
  • Have an aptitude to teach within the Foundation Phase department
  • Have and demonstrate a clear understanding of current trends and practices on assessment, teaching methodology and practice within the Foundation Phase
  • Hold a recognised teaching qualification and have a current SACE registration
  • Be a creative problem solver with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong managerial, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Show a commitment to ongoing personal development with a future-orientated approach to teaching and learning
  • Have the ability to take the initiative, innovate and reflect on all aspects of curriculum implementation
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the CAPS curriculum coupled with a high level of innovation and a willingness to keep up-to-date with trends in the educational sphere
  • Display high levels of computer literacy (Google Apps, MS Office packages, iPad applications and SMART Board)
  • Be self-motivated and energetic, with a desire to participate fully in the life of the School
  • Have the ability to manage a departmental budget, allocate resources and manage maintenance and expenditures
  • Have the ability to engage with different stakeholders, including the IEB and other external bodies
