CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

As a Legal Advisor specializing in legal and compliance, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that the university operates within legal guidelines and minimising risks associated with legal matters. You will be responsible for providing expert legal advice on a range of issues pertaining to regulatory compliance, gender-based violence, student discipline, litigation, contract law, and more. This role reports directly to the Senior Director: Legal Services and offers an opportunity to contribute to strategic decision-making process.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  1. Provide legal guidance and support on regulatory compliance matters to the university.
  2. Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  3. Review, draft and negotiate contracts, agreements and other legal documents.
  4. Conduct legal research and stay updated on changes in laws and regulations affecting the university.
  5. Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures.
  6. Provide legal insights and recommendations to support business decisions.
  7. Collaborate cross-functionally with various departments to ensure legal compliance across the university.
  8. Ensure all legal documents are accurate, compliant and reflective of universitys interests.
  9. Ensure relevant and accurate legal advice is provided to internal clients.
  10. Deal with matters with multiple stakeholders.
  11. Assist in managing legal disputes and litigation, including working with external attorneys and counsel when necessary.
  12. Document and maintain legal files and matters/issues.
  13. Attend to PAIA requests.
  14. Educate and train employees on legal issues and compliance matters.
  15. Identify potential legal risks and develop mitigation strategies.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
  2. Minimum 5 years experience in a similar role
  3. Admitted attorney of the High Court (required)
  4. Knowledge of IP management, commercial law, litigation, public law, etc.
  5. Strong ability in conducting legal research and analysis
  6. Ability to prioritise and work meticulously,
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  9. Strong organizational skills
  10. Upholding the universitys values and ethics
