Job DescriptionAt the Perishable Products Export Control Board (PPECB), the Laboratory Manager reports to the General Manager and has overall responsibility and accountability for the successful operation and administration of the laboratory.


The high-level objectives of this role include:

  • To manage all strategic, scientific, commercial, marketing, and financial aspects for the laboratory;
  • To ensure the licensure and accreditation of the laboratory and its methodologies including compliance with all national legislation, the major shareholder's requirements and customer expectations;
  • To ensure new business and innovation opportunities are created and harnessed for financial sustainability of the laboratory;
  • To ensure the management of daily operations and direction of laboratory personnel for compliance to set procedures and regulations;
  • To ensure management of both internal and external stakeholder relations for the sustainability of the laboratory;
  • To ensure maintenance of the risk and compliance to quality management systems for accreditation safety requirements; and
  • To ensure operational delivery of analytical services and maintain international laboratory proficiency certification to optimize the analytical methods via appropriate Research and Development (R&D).
  • Job Requirements
    Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in analytical chemistry/ biochemistry/ toxicology or related fields,
  • A PhD in the analytical chemistry/ biochemistry/ toxicology or related fields; and
  • Membership with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions is preferred.

Required Experience:

  • Ten (10) years of specialized experience in analytical chemistry and microbiology with laboratory experience in food and feed testing, method development and validation.
  • Recognition as a technical expert/ senior scientist with experience in publishing and presenting internationally/peer reviewed publications in the field of analytical chemistry and microbiology;
  • At least five (5) years of management experience in an appropriate laboratory environment.
  • A track record of the implementation of the ISO 17025 quality management system with experience as a technical signatory is required and nominated as a SANAS representative would be beneficial.

Required Knowledge:

  • Broad knowledge of biological sciences with an indepth understanding of analytical chemistry and microbiology, food and feed sciences, laboratory operations and quality management systems.
  • Familiarity with the workings of national government and the perishable products industry is important.
  • Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act is required to ensure good corporate governance and risk management in the working environment.
  • Being acquainted with various quality management systems, including ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 would be key.

  • Strong leadership, managing diversity and emotional intelligence skills i.e. high selfmotivation levels, advanced listening skills, and welldeveloped relationship skills.
  • Adeptness at giving highlevel presentations, and still paying attention to detail;
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fastchanging environment;
  • Fully conversant with the mechanics of compiling, analyzing, managing and reporting on a variety of budgets; and
  • Agility to think in creative and innovative ways.
