Head: Curricular Community Engagement

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Strategic and conceptual leadership in community engagement through the development of practice theory including the facilitation and implementation of strategic priorities related to community engagement;
  • Guiding, advising, assisting and empowering faculties to incorporate community engagement into academic programmes while synchronizing curricular community engagement activities and projects in the faculties;
  • Promoting best practices in teaching, learning, evaluation, monitoring and assessment of programmes that involve community engagement;
  • Working with and in communities using a community development paradigm;
  • Initiating (where necessary) and serving on committee structures to support curricular community engagement in the faculties;
  • Conducting research in order to stay abreast of trends and produce new knowledge;
  • Representing the University on SAHECEF and other national and international bodies;
  • Contributing to the implementation of strategies for evaluation and remediation of problematic curricular community engagement situations;
  • Management of institutional community engagement through a speciallydeveloped online system and improvement of the system as needed;
  • Management of finances regarding student levies across faculties and departments to ensure fairness and transparency;
  • Develop and maintain strong ties between the Unit, the Department and the faculties; and
  • Effectively build and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • An appropriate doctoral degree in Education, Community Development/ Engagement, or related field, If the doctoral degree is not in Education, an appropriate Diploma or Post Graduate Certificate in Development Studies is essential;
  • At least eight years' experience within higher education including experience in and exposure to:
  • Coordinating and facilitating training interventions and rendering support to academic staff through curricular community engagement in higher education;
  • Working with local communities and engaging with community leaders, NGOs and institutions;
  • Teaching experience within the higher education environment including the development of teaching and assessment practices;
  • Diversity management;
  • Education practice and education technology; and
  • Handling finances.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Project management skills;
  • Financial management;
  • Language proficiency;
  • Negotiation skills;
  • Indepth knowledge of community development theories and practices;
  • Insight into the functioning and structures of a faculty or other academic unit.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Teaching experience within the higher education environment;
  • Experience in working with communities in and around Pretoria.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
