We are looking for a creative and critical thinker, with excellent research capability who will amplify our impact and knowledge (internally and externally), use empirical evidence, insights and lessons to spread, grow, replicate and scaling-up Nal'ibali's working interventions and innovations.

Our work transforms communities into learning spaces whether in the homes, centres, schools and community spaces where children get adequate opportunities to read and engage with enticing content stories.


The incumbent will oversee evidence mapping processes, create data packages (write papers and reviews and present these findings in journals and conferences) targeting various external audiences and for internal use.

The Head of RII will also be responsible for quality assurance of programme designs for efficiency, coherence, relevance and sustainability of all interventions.

This position is based at the Nal'ibali head office in Kenilworth, Cape Town.

Key responsibilities:

Reporting to the director, the head of research, impact and innovation will focus on the following:

Generation and analysis of evidence and impact: design, manage, and execute an overall strategy for evidence mapping, collection and analysis of empirical data, both quantitative and qualitative, from different parts of the organization and from different data sources to address knowledge gaps, build new evidence and inform innovation on language and literacy development in the ecosystem.

Active learning culture through an effective knowledge management system: develop and oversee an inclusive knowledge management system that allows Nal'ibali to plan, implement, collate, analyse and learn from its actions.


Database management:

design and oversee an accessible and visualised data catalogue with clarity on purpose of data sets, data sources, collection points, flows and actual utilisation.


Impact measurement:
together with the data manager, create measurement frameworks that can be used for evaluating implementation and impact of our programmes, campaigns, services and activities

Programme innovation:
leverage and analyse internal and external data and research findings to identify areas of opportunity and development in programming

Staff development:
work with teams throughout the organisation (head office and in provinces) to help define and embed creative methods and tools for programme measurement and improved effectiveness planning

M&E tools:

oversee the development of clear programme and project output and outcome indicators for organisational strategy planning, monitoring and evaluation.

Oversee development and revision of M&E tools and data collection procedures (e.g. logical framework, project performance tracking, indicators, data flow chart, manuals)

Learning in the literacy ecosystem:
together with the RII team, analyse, synthesise, and produce key insights and reporting that can inform multiple audiences within and across the organisation and to our wide network of stakeholders

Documentation of all interventions:
build a data-rich culture across teams, influence key leadership and staff understanding of the importance of evidence-based decision making and of integrating measurement and evaluation into their activities

Central accessible and active data repository: support the data manager to develop relevant dashboard(s) and data visualisations for key users to better explore, analyse, and visualise their data to help understand, communicate and improve outcomes

Requirements:

Masters or postgraduate degree in research, development, education, behaviour change economics, or another related field. PhD will be advantageous
At least eight years minimum work experience of which five years' in senior management positions
Prior experience and strong capacity with most of the following:
Demonstrated understanding of learning and knowledge management principles and capacity to deliver knowledge management and/or organisational learning activities

Capacity to lead and direct national and/or provincial research projects, applied research methods; able to engage critically with research design and findings.

Proven experience in designing and implementing strategic initiatives.
Programme monitoring and evaluation, research and data management
Research within the education sector, literacy would be added advantage
Participation in programme or project learning platforms and activities.
Creative problem-solving and managed diverse teams towards outcomes.
Excellent English writing and presentation skills for public facing communications
Independent and driven self-starter, able to work proactively and independently.
