Purpose

The Head: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), reporting to the CEO, is an integral member of the leadership team. This role involves designing, developing, and implementing the organization's Environmental and Social Management System along with implementing ESG risk mitigation actions across a growing portfolio of energy projects.

Responsibilities include reporting to investors, lenders, and a wider stakeholder group, overseeing project reporting and permitting. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver, collaborating across finance, engineering, and legal disciplines to drive utility-scale renewable energy projects, supporting the organization's mission of decarbonizing South Africa's energy system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create ESG strategy, policies, and guidelines aligned with Investor requirements.
  • Design, implement, and oversee the ESMS to meet international ESG standards, providing an E&S risk management perspective throughout the investment lifecycle.
  • Lead environmental due diligence and permitting processes for renewable energy projects.
  • Maintain and update company policies for managing environmental and social impact against global standards.
  • Address escalating ESG issues to prevent risks to people, environment, or property.
  • Collaborate with contractors and consultants on-site to ensure integrated ESG activities.
  • Establish ESG requirements in external partner contracts and oversee implementation.
  • Monitor external partners' ESG compliance throughout project phases.
  • Prepare and deliver comprehensive ESG reports for various stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's or PhD preferred) in relevant fields.
  • 8+ years of experience in CSR/ESG, CSI, Enterprise/Supplier Development, or Sustainability.
  • Prior experience in green and environmental management within a corporate environment.
  • Expertise in marketing, communications, and stakeholder engagement related to sustainability.
  • Strong background in strategy, planning, and project management in sustainability and economic development.
  • Experience engaging with senior corporate and public sector stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of enterprise or supplier development, particularly in SME capacity building.
  • Experience in socio-economic development, community engagement would be beneficial.
