Role Purpose


The purpose is to lead and enhance the full suite of legal capabilities across the business by providing quality legal services and partnering with the business to ensure effective management of legal risks while supporting strategic.


Requirements:

  • Relevant Legal degree (B Com, B A, B Juris or B Proc and LL B)
  • Master of Law (LL M) (preferred)
  • Admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa
  • 810 years' post admission experience in managing corporate law
  • Experience in financial service or insurance industry

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Keep abreast of trends, legislation, legal developments and best practices within the legal discipline to optimise service delivery and offering.
  • Develop and drive the implementation of a legal strategy and framework in line with business strategic objectives that ensures stakeholders receive optimal legal support.
  • Communicate and distil best practice legal concepts into business, ensuring that lessons learned are communicated both within and outside the legal community.
  • Engage with stakeholders to analyse legal requirements and provide stakeholders with concise, accurate, timely legal advice and legally sound solutions to business problems.
  • Identify opportunities to develop new processes and practices to strengthen the quality and consistency of legal opinions.
  • Create platforms to support the knowledge sharing of legal intellectual property and collaboration across the various business teams within the business.
  • Develop, implement and proactively monitor the compliance of the legal framework, templates and polices.
  • Continuously monitor the environment to proactively identify potential legal risks and notify the relevant stakeholders of risks and potential solutions to mitigate legal risk.
  • Develop concise legal risk reports that highlight potential legal risks across the business and present insights at relevant management and governance meetings.
  • Review legal documents for technical correctness and ensure that the latest legal precedents have been included in the documents.
  • Provide support in structuring, negotiating and drafting agreements and documentation in line with business requirements and best practices.
  • Provide legal advice and recommend solutions on strategic projects and initiatives.
  • Draft and periodically review standard legal documents or templates in collaboration with the legal community.
  • Engage with legal service providers to negotiate cost effective service agreements that supports the legal strategy and framework.
  • Manage and maintain the preferred supplier list for all legal service providers in line with MMI procurement principles.
  • Support in the defence of material legal matters and ensure maximum protection of the groups legal rights.
  • Perform prelitigation work to minimise risks and maximise legal rights working with strategic partners as required.
  • Coordinate with legal service providers in order to pursue legal cases for and against the group to protect MMI's interest.
  • Provide expert advice and litigation support to stakeholders
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to the process of negotiating objective and realistic service level agreements, monitor appropriateness and recommend adjustments
  • Define service practices which build rewarding relationships, encourage innovation and allow others to provide exceptional client service
  • Deliver on service level agreements made with clients and internal and external stakeholders in order to ensure that client expectations are managed
  • Make recommendations to improve client service and fair treatment of clients within area of responsibility
  • Participate and contribute to a culture which builds rewarding relationships, facilitates feedback and provides exceptional client service
