Job purpose


Responsible for leadership and oversight of all elements of the Investment function, which comprises a team of 10-12 deal makers that are required to deploy over R200m per year across 5 funds and 10-20 transactions.

Accountable for working with Fund Owners to develop realistic deployment objectives, managing team capacity and allocation, guiding Partners and Principals where required on highly complex transactions across the spectrum of debt, mezzanine and equity instruments as well as providing guidance to other deal team members throughout the end-to-end transaction cycle.


Significant activities include providing ultimate oversight of and developing best practice in the sourcing and evaluation of investment opportunities, the due diligence and execution process across transactions and working alongside the Portfolio Management (PM) team to ensure a seamless transaction hand-over process post investment as well as taking a board observer or member role on strategic portfolio assets (where applicable).


They will also have the potential to be Fund Owners (the senior point person for a fund) where they will collaborate with the CEO and functional heads in the areas of investor relations, fundraising, portfolio management and fund operations to report to and engage with investors and other key stakeholders.

These individuals typically have exceptional strategic, technical investment and interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to leverage team resources and build strong relationships with key external stakeholders.

Output 1:
Leadership

Weight: 25%

  • Lead the Investment team like an owner/manager by keeping the Customer, People and Business requirements in balance.
  • Foster the culture in line with the Edge culture and our EPIC values.
  • Build the capability & capacity of the Ventures Investment team, managing their growth & development accordingly.
  • Ensure the implementation/enhancement of the EVP (including remuneration) to optimize engagement.
  • Lead the Investment forums/reporting rhythms and ensure the tone is set in line with our values.
  • Foster transformation in the business in line with the Edge Transformation vision and model.
  • Set up and cascade an innovation infrastructure that will set the tone to enable the Ventures team to innovate.
  • Actively participate and contribute to the appropriate Ventures and Edgewide forums.

Output 2:
Investment

Weight: 25%

  • Maintain a strong network of origination contacts.
  • Lead weekly deal pipeline meetings and motivate team against goals.
  • Lead deal flow meetings, prioritisation and resource allocation for deals.
  • Ensure zerodefect governance and compliance during closing.

Output 3:
Fund Management / Ownership

Weight: 20%

  • Collaborate with function heads to pull together the data and information required to engage with and report to key fund investors on fund performance, finance and operations.
  • Lead relevant internal and external fund forums (mancos, steercos and board meetings) to provide oversight for funds across the fund management value chain.

Output 4:
Stakeholder management

Weight: 20%

  • Understand the key stakeholder landscape and look to unlock value through managing these appropriately.
  • Lead the approach to ensure we bedazzle our key customers.
  • Build your expertise and that of the team to enable us to remain trusted advisors to the client.
  • Manage key client's interactions particularly where the stakes are high on both the risk and reward side (i.e. have strategic impact).

Output 5:
Risk management

Weight: 10%

  • Understand the key risks across a fund and report and raise them in the appropriate forums.
  • Proactively manage key risks and ensure mitigating actions are well thought through and implemented at appropriate team level.

Qualifications

  • Honours degree with strong problem solving and quantitative underpinning (e.g. Engineering, Business Science).
  • CA or CFA with an MBA being advantageous.
  • Formal training in PE/VC fund management.

Experience

  • 10 years+ PE/VC investment experience in preferably smaller and early stage transactions across of the spectrum of debt, mezzanine and equity instruments.
  • 4 years+ business leadership experience.
  • Experience in venturing, investment banking, corporate M&A would also be considered.
