  • Bachelor's Degree: While not always mandatory, a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, information technology, electroinc engineering, or a related discipline can be advantageous.
  • Hardware Knowledge: In-depth understanding of network hardware devices and peripheral technology. Added bonus if the incumbent has GSM networking experience and skills.
  • Operating Systems: Proficiency in operating systems, especially those commonly used in the industry i.e Linux and OpenWRT.
  • Troubleshooting: Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve hardware and device issues efficiently.
  • Networking: Deep functional understanding of networking concepts and configurations.
  • Customer Service: Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, as hardware and device specialists often interact with end-users to craft solutions, track performance and diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Documentation: Ability to document hardware configurations, issues, and solutions for reference and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay Updated: The IT field is dynamic, and hardware and device specialists should stay informed about the latest technologies, updates, and industry best practices.
  • Analytical Thinking: The ability to analyse complex hardware and device issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Collaboration Skills: Work effectively within a team, especially when collaborating with network specialists, software developers, or other IT professionals.


Overview

Our client is looking for a hardware and device specialist, with a particular focus on communications devices such as modems, routers and other networking and communications equipment.

In particular, this role focuses on our clients range of devices, which include both OpenWRT based equipment as well as single-use Android devices.

Linux and OpenWRT

OpenWRT (Wireless Router Firmware) is an open-source project that provides firmware for

wireless routers and other network devices. It is based on the Linux operating system and is

designed to replace the proprietary firmware that comes pre-installed on many commercial

routers and embedded devices. OpenWRT is known for its flexibility, customization options, and robust set of features, making it a popular choice for networking enthusiasts, developers, and organizations.

Almost all the hardware Trinity supplies and supports are based on OpenWRT. As such the

incumbent must be comfortable with Linux. This includes a familiarity with the Linux operating system, its architecture, commands, file system structure, and basic administration tasks.

We use remote SSH access when troubleshooting or performing support tasks on our devices, and so candidates should be proficient using the CLI.

They should be able to read, understand, debug and troubleshoot shell scripts written in BASH.

Function Overarching Deliverable

Overall, a hardware and device specialist play a crucial role in maintaining the functionality, reliability, and security of the devices Trinity supplies. They need a solid understanding of hardware architecture, networking topologies and architecture, be able to troubleshoot remotely both hardware and connectivity issues and have the ability to adapt and grow with evolving technologies.

KPIs

  • Device Selection and Configuration:They will be the authority on device selection and its subsequent configuration. In conjunction with the sales and solutions team, the hardware specialist will bring their deep understanding of the functionality and capabilities of our devices to the conversation. The team, and our clients, will look to the device specialist to fit the correct device to the specific needs of the customer. Trinity has the ability to extensively modify and customize the firmware on our devices. The device specialist will be able to assis in defining what customizations are necessary on an per customer basis
  • Maintenance and Upgrades: The device specialist will identify and execute remote maintenance and upgrade campaigns. This may be in response to a bug-fix, security improvement or functional upgrade.
  • Troubleshooting: They will identify and resolve hardware-related issues, which may involve diagnosing problems, replacing faulty components, or providing solutions for compatibility issues. Furthermore, in conjunction with our network engineers, they will troubleshoot and implement networking and communications issues.
  • Compatibility Testing: Ensure that new hardware devices are compatible with existing systems and software. They may also test different configurations to optimize performance.
  • Security Measures: Implement and maintain security measures for hardware components to protect against physical threats, unauthorized access, or data breaches.
  • Documentation: Keep detailed records of hardware configurations, installations, and maintenance activities. This documentation helps in troubleshooting and planning for future upgrades.
  • Vendor Relations: Work closely with hardware vendors to stay updated on the latest technologies, product releases, and support options. They may also be involved in procurement activities. Identify and evaluate potential new suppliers and vendors that can extend and complement Trinity's device offering.
  • User Support: Provide Tier-2 support to end-users for hardware-related issues, offering guidance and solutions to ensure smooth operation.
  • Network Integration: Collaborate with network specialists to ensure proper integration of hardware components into the overall network infrastructure of both Trinity and the customer.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor the performance of our devices to identify potential issues or areas for improvement. This involves using monitoring tools and performance analysis.
  • Compliance: Ensure that our devices comply with industry regulations, standards, and company policies.
