STELO is a projects, operations and maintenance company specialising in starting up new mines. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Mechanical Superintendent to oversee the Mechanical maintenance activities for the commissioning, ramp up and steady state operations of a mining process plant.

Job Description:

Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Superintendent specializing in mining process plants, particularly with expertise in ball mills, crushers, flotation, filtration, and drying systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the mechanical maintenance, repair, and optimization. This role requires strong leadership, technical proficiency, and a proactive approach to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the process plant.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Leadership and Team Management:
  • Lead and manage a team of mechanical technicians and engineers to execute maintenance, repair, and optimization tasks effectively.
  • Foster a culture of safety, excellence, and teamwork among the mechanical team members.
  • Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to enhance the skills and knowledge of the mechanical team.
Maintenance and Optimization:
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for ball mills, crushers, flotation cells, filtration units, and drying systems to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments of mechanical equipment to identify potential issues and implement corrective actions promptly.
  • Collaborate with other departments such as operations, electrical, and process engineering to optimize plant performance and productivity.
Technical Expertise:
  • Utilize advanced knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment specific to mining process plants, including but not limited to, crushers, ball mills, flotation cells, thickeners, and filtration units.
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical problems and develop innovative solutions to improve equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements in mining equipment and processes.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, standards, and company policies to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement control measures to mitigate potential hazards associated with mechanical operations.
  • Champion safety initiatives and promote a safety-first culture throughout the organization.
Budget and Resource Management:
  • Develop and manage the mechanical department budget, including forecasting and cost control measures.
  • Optimize resource allocation and utilization to achieve operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements within the mechanical maintenance function.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or relevant Trade
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in mechanical maintenance and supervision within the mining industry, with a focus on process plants.
  • Proven experience with ball mills, crushers, flotation cells, filtration units, and drying systems, preferably in mineral processing operations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse team of mechanical professionals.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and technical proficiency in diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues.
  • Sound knowledge of safety regulations, environmental standards, and industry best practices.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and interact with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience working in remote or international locations, preferably in Africa, is advantageous.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in French is a plus.
