The Life Tax Specialist is a member of the Group Tax Team, and plays a role of the implementation of the Group Tax Strategy which encompasses the below:

  • Tax compliance and reporting;
  • Tax planning and provides technical tax advice to BUs in line with current legislation;
  • External stakeholder management; and
  • Tax risk management. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Tax Manager in driving the implementation of the tax strategy and, ensuring optimal delivery of tax advisory services to meet stakeholder needs and enable business growth
  • Supporting the Tax Manager in engaging with and managing internal stakeholders and external stakeholders (such as National Treasury, SARS, Industry bodies etc in contributing to the formulation of tax policy)
  • Identifying and implementing (or supporting implementation of) and tax process efficiencies using technology
  • Tax compliance and dispute management for insurance companies and other group companies
  • Tax accounting / deferred tax for year-end purposes
  • Quarterly tax calculations and tax accounts reconciliations
  • Continuously and proactively engage with and provide technical tax advice to stakeholders and Group Tax to ensure tax compliance with new and current tax legislation
  • Ensure payment to SARS within deadline to avoid interest and penalty charges
  • Examine financial statements and accounting practices at a consolidated/group level (life or short-term insurance companies) in order to define all the tax requirements for that part of the organisation.
  • Provide training to various internal stakeholders to optimize tax awareness and competence
  • Provide tax advisory services to TCM on the tax impact and requirements for various deals
  • Conduct tax research to ensure the company complies with all applicable tax legislation and amendments to regulations
  • Assist with queries from tax authorities and ensuring the company is not unduly exposed to tax risks
