Job Purpose:

The Senior Legal Bookkeeper is responsible for managing the law firm's trust and business accounts, ensuring full compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. This role requires hands-on experience with LawPac, investment handling, and general ledger management, while supporting the Finance Manager with reporting, reconciliations, and audits.

Key Responsibilities:1. Bookkeeping & Financial Records

  • Maintain accurate day-to-day financial records for the firm.
  • Manage and reconcile the firm's trust accounts and business accounts in compliance with the Legal Practice Act and internal policies.
  • Process invoices, receipts, payments, and investment transactions accurately and on time.
  • Monitor and manage debtors and creditors for the firm.

2. Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and partners.
  • Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Ensure compliance with South African legislation (SARS, VAT, FICA, etc.) and internal financial policies.
  • Maintain internal financial controls and procedures.

3. Software & Systems

  • Operate LawPac accounting software efficiently.
  • Generate financial reports and provide data for management decision-making.
  • Maintain digital and physical financial records according to compliance standards.

4. Team Support & Communication

  • Provide guidance or mentorship to junior bookkeeping staff if required.
  • Liaise with partners and administrative staff regarding financial, investment, and account matters.
  • Assist the Finance Manager with ad hoc projects and financial analysis.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Matric / Grade 12 required; tertiary qualification in Accounting, Bookkeeping, or Finance preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' bookkeeping experience, with at least 2 years in a law firm environment.
  • Hands-on experience with LawPac accounting software.
  • Experience managing firm trust and business accounts, as well as investments.
  • Strong understanding of legal bookkeeping practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general ledger management.
