Job Summary
The Akeso Nursing Unit Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operational efficiency of a specific nursing unit within a Netcare Akeso facility. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered mental healthcare services, adherence to clinical standards, and effective resource management.
- The Nursing Unit Manager will be responsible for coordinating improved quality nursing care by ensuring compliance to professional and ethical practice.
- The incumbent will also be responsible for monitoring and ensuring that nursing care and service delivery is implemented and practiced within a multi-disciplinary quality assurance team. In accordance the incumbent will be accountable for coordinating capacity building, mentoring and training. Duties include but not limited to: Manage all related nursing services and activities.
- Ensure that nursing standards, quality assurance and risk management is maintained within the hospital.

Job Responsibilities
* **Clinical Leadership & Patient Care:**
* Lead and motivate nursing staff to provide excellent patient care in line with Netcare Akeso's clinical protocols and standards for mental health.
* Oversee the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care, ensuring individualized treatment plans are followed.
* Monitor and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
* Address and resolve complex clinical issues and patient complaints promptly and effectively.
* Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, and other multidisciplinary team members to optimize patient outcomes.
* **Operational Management:**
* Manage the daily operations of the nursing unit, including bed management, patient admissions, and discharges.
* Develop and implement staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage and efficient utilization of resources.
* Monitor and manage unit budget, including cost control and resource allocation.
* Ensure compliance with all relevant healthcare legislation, policies, and internal procedures.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and unit documentation.
* **Staff Management & Development:**
* Recruit, orient, train, and mentor nursing staff within the unit.
* Conduct regular performance appraisals, provide constructive feedback, and address performance issues.
* Foster a positive and collaborative working environment that promotes professional growth and teamwork.
* Identify staff training needs and facilitate opportunities for continuous professional development.
* Manage conflict resolution and disciplinary processes within the unit.
* **Quality & Risk Management:**
* Implement and monitor quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
* Conduct regular audits to ensure adherence to clinical standards, safety protocols, and infection control measures.
* Identify and mitigate risks within the unit, reporting incidents and implementing corrective actions.
* Participate in facility-wide quality improvement committees and initiatives.

Job Qualifications
* **Education:**
* Current registration as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
* A post-basic qualification in Psychiatric Nursing is essential.
* A management qualification or diploma would be advantageous.
* **Experience:**
- A minimum of 5 years' experience as a Registered Nurse, and a minimum of 2 years recent experience in a Psychiatric environment.
- Experience and / or qualification in a nursing management capacity (Nursing Manager/Unit Manager) would be an advantage.
* Minimum of 5 years of post-basic experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or management role within a mental health setting.
* Demonstrated experience in managing a nursing unit, including staff supervision, budget management, and operational oversight.
* Experience in a private hospital setting would be beneficial.
* **Skills & Attributes:**
* Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
* Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
* Proficient in clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
* Sound knowledge of mental health legislation, ethical guidelines, and best practices.
* Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
* Computer literacy (MS Office suite).
* Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
