Job Description:

The University Relations Division plays a vital strategic and operational role in shaping the public perception, reputation, and stakeholder engagement of the university. This division functions as the central hub for all institutional communications, external engagement, brand positioning, and public interface, ensuring the university maintains a consistent, compelling, and credible voice across all platforms.

The Marketing and Brand Department within the University Relations Division, focuses on internal and external marketing, corporate branding, graphic design, events management and social media management. The Marketing and Brand department ensures that the university brand is consistent throughout all internal and external communications and that all marketing initiatives enhance the university's reputation, foster engagement, and support student recruitment.

Job Purpose:

The Graphic Designer's key function is to conceptualise ideas through the integration of text, typography and illustrations in the production of printed and marketing material. The Graphic Designer is supplied with raw information by the client, which is utilized to create, design and transform into a visually pleasing, printable product that satisfies the client as well as communicate the intended message.

Responsibilities:

  • To accurately determine customer needs and ensure their requirements are fully (100%) understood and met.
  • Consult with stakeholders.
  • To meet all deadlines and delivery dates within costs quoted and accepted by the customer.
  • To translate information into a visual product to communicate the concept or idea effectively.
  • Use graphic design methodology to create graphic designs for marketing and academic/research purposes.
  • Information design for the University.
  • Use graphic design methodology to create multi-page publications.
  • To ensure that all graphic design projects are in line with the overall strategic branding objectives of UJ as well as UJ Corporate Identity.
  • To record total quantity of projects completed, including time spent and cost, in order to compile reports and financial statements.
  • To determine the needs and organise the procurement of consumables/stock, maintenance and upgrading of design/computer equipment.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelors' degree (NQF 7) in Graphic Design or a relevant qualification.
  • Four (4) years' industry experience in graphic design.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years' managerial experience.
  • Knowledge of institutional policies, procedures, programmes, and relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of Graphic Design practices and theory.
  • Knowledge of Financial principles.
  • Knowledge of Management principles.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • IT knowledge and skills.
  • Printing practices and theory.
  • Computer skills (Graphic Design Programmes).
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills

Recommendations:

  • A Post Graduate Diploma/Degree in Graphic Design.
  • Diploma or relevant qualification in Management
